Assume you are working in a large portfolio with multiple program managers. Each program manager has there own PMs.

How do you structure the portfolio to ensure success. I left the definition of success intentionally vauge.

I'll bite - how about we provide the project managers from different programs a common forum to benefit program integration, and provide program managers (and project managers) from different programs a common forum to benefit the portfolio as a whole?

benefit dependency map and program roadmap should provide a high level view of achieving the business value from the initiatives identified at portfolio level.

High level business case should provide the foundation and justification for initiating a program. This can be further updated and elaborated as more clarity evolves through progressive elaboration.

Since components are completely identified at early stage of program, program governance procedure and other such processes can be updated as when it is required.

Very interesting. Have you used benefit dependency maps before? Who typically prepares them?

I heartedly agree with the HL-Business Case and Program Roadmap. How about execution....how do you link the three levels?

I am interested in learning more about "benefit dependency map" as well. Appreciate appropriate pointers.

One need to set Goals and objective for the selection and success of a portfolio. Measure each and every project or program under the portfolio against these Goals and Objectives. Let us take an example of SAP Deployment Portfolio i an organization. Portfolio is subdivide in to program of SAP Deployment for ERP, SAP Deployment for Project Managment, SAP Deployment for Cost Accounts, SAP Deployment for Material Handling and Storage. Each program includes, Installation, configuration, customization, Implementation and trainings, etc. Although Project Managers and nature of program will be different from one and other, but if the goals and objectives are well defined then each program can be assess and declare successful accordingly.

I have working experience with MS Project Server with Ms SharePoint server. I would say it is the best combination to plan and implement a robust system for the portfolio management system with the different nature of program and projects.
