Hello,

I was wondering if any of you had any opinion regarding getting accredited from PMI as opposed to the Association of Project Managers (UK)

I can't really answer - but I hope someone does as I'm in a similar position - I am actually a memeber of PMI, but no accredited, and am wondering, as I'm based in UK too, whether APM offers anything more.

From my experience of PMI so far, and having asked around a little, PMI certification is globally recognised - not sure that can be said of the APM.

On a side note - hope there are some views posted here from readers - as these forums are never particularlly vibrant - which is a shame. Busy lives i guess.

it depends, if your want to limit your work area to the UK, you could go for APM courses, or proceed for PMI certifications if looking for a Global (only US base Market).

I'm not certain about the APM certification having never heard of it on this side of the Atlantic. I'm PMI certified and have noticed that it's become increasingly asked for in the industry.

Speaking personally, I thought this was one certification that was definitely worth it.

Working as a project management consultant in the UK, I am fairly familiar with both. I am a member of the PMI, and organisationally we are very closely aligned with the APM.

Earlier comments about the PMI certificaqtion are accurate - PMP status is recognised world wide. It is achieved by passing a fairly vigorous examination; and of course, continuing professional development is required to maintain the certification. PMI is in the process of targeting specific industries with their certification, and their web site should be visited for the latest information.

The APM has two levels of accreditation. Passing an examination, similar to PMI's, ewards the participant with APMP status. the second level of accreditation (in this case certification) is achieved through a process of writing a short paper seeking approval, then writing a longer paper (say 5K words) seeking approval, and if approved an interview, lasting about an hour with two professional PMs to ensure the participant is worthy of becoming a Certificated Project Manager.

The latter is more rigorous in my opinion, but doesn't really apply outside the UK. Obviously visiting the two web sites permits the acquisition of the latest information. My organisation runs a series of programmes to assist with the achievement of the APMP, or becoming certificated in the UK, and further information can be obtained on our web site www.citi.co.uk, or by e-mailing [email protected]. This is not meant to be a blatant advertisement, but only a place people can seek independent advice.

It depends what you want. I am both and the PMI is more useful for those working in a Global market the PMP is widly recognised around the world. However in the UK the APM has a clear professional development route from and introductory level to certified proejct manager. Next year the APM will be offering Chartered Project Manager which should become the new standard in the UK. for more information look at Project mangement certification

Hi Isabelle,

I'd suggest that if you're based in the UK do the APM courses; the APM are also in the process of gaining chartertered status, so one day you could be a Chartered Project Manager!

I'd also agree with Paul that the PMI is more applicable to the global and perhaps more so the American market.

Have a look at the following article:

Project Management Qualifications

Thanks,

Baz
