Rather than relying on analytical tools and other non-personal means of dealing with a negative person, I think it is better to approach them when they are calm (and you are calm) and ask them what they don't like about the project- and what I can do to change their perception about it. Seems pretty simple. I have never stepped away from this type of session without an improved working relationship with that person. Saving Changes...

Agree with everyone.
In the case that the stakeholder is in executive management, he might have more power than a team member or a customer staff person. Here I recommend to involve the sponsor and try to invite this stakeholder to the steering committee, where he can be contained by his peers.
In any case, as a project manager, selecting the steering committee members and the defining the org-chart is a key task to control and channel the power in the project. Saving Changes...
