A friend of mine told me about Systemic approach in relation with project Management few days ago. From my point of view I told him it has to do with 4 basic concepts as systems and social systems, complexity, the whole, interaction.

But I agree to have some difficulties to put it in practice on my day to day activities. Do anybody can bring some input and practical tools to clarify my thought.

I have written articles about that and I have written articles to apply systemic approach in projects that have been considered as best practices for the IIBA or the PMI. Systemic approach is about to integration and organizational survival. Systemic approach has to be applied before the project exists by performing the business analysis activity named "needs analysis" by the PMI inside the Practice Guide for Business Analysis. I can write a lot, but go to Bertalhanfy, Mario Bunge, Prahalad, Ackoff. What I can say is: if organizations do not apply systemic approach to define strategyc initiatives they will die. I am right now working in my seventh initiative working on that.

Thank you Sergio for the input and the article you wrote about enterprise architecture. I am looking for a more focused approach of interactions between Systemic approach and PPM.

I do not like to do this type of things but you can read this post that was considered as best practice: http://www.projectmanagement.com/blog/How-...Analysis/15655/
I hope the PMI“s PMnetwork will publish a short article on march where I explain how to apply systemic approach to get organizational agility.

Is the same than in the artilcle. When you implement a solution you have to analyze the enterprise architecture to understand the as-is and the to-be where the to-be is the new enterprise according to the strategy. The solution is intended to solve a business problem that happend because a need of transformation happend. The need of transformation is because the environment has changed. So, by understanding that the whole organization is an open and adaptable system that reacts to environmental changes is how you apply systemic thinking. All the work starts before a project exists by creating a business case. The busines case will define the solution. And to define the solution you have to use systemic thinking using some tool to evaluate your enterprise architecture. Systemic thinking is about to integrate. Each process in your project management life cycle must be defined and executed with systemic thinking as your focus. Tom Peter“s Seven S model or other models like Zachman framework can help you as a guide to apply systemic thinking.

If the question is about systems approaches based in Systems Theory (as opposed to how to build a systemic method or framework), then I think I get it. I've been using Systems approaches for about 25 years and they do indeed focus on such things as complexity, holons (the "whole" you mentioned), entropy, and so on. The ideas are applicable across many professions and domains. If that is indeed what you are referring to, then the book "Project Management: Designing effective organisational structures in construction" by David Moore might be helpful. The title is a bit misleading in that it does not focus exclusively or even primarily on construction. Also, the language in some sections is pretty dense (even though I had been using the principles for 20 years at the time I read it, I still had to re-read some paragraphs 2 or 3 times). But it covers the concepts and how to apply them to project management practice pretty well.
