It also depends on how big an organization -
For instance in a $10 billion company will arrange for corp retreats where all the teams meet and play different team building games. Interact with each other to accomplish one common value i.e. mission of the company,
In the scenario - some companies wouldn't want to invest money but to use behavior skills especially if you're working in an offshore, nearshore model. You kickoff on phone, ask the team introduce and identify objectives. Basically we're sharing common goals, understand each other's cultural background because sensitivity to diversity is very important and useful. Techniques for team building used in both scenarios are - brainstorming, trust building exercises, how to manage conflict, assignment of online activities to share the mission and objective of a project, ,
Thanks Amy, I totally agree with these approaches and you can also engage the team with team on project activities like creating WBS. Saving Changes...

I like the paintball Idea. Never thought it could work as a team work activity :-)
Almost every PM ceremony provides opportunities for team building. I'd written an article about this pretty recently on my personal blog - WBS creation, risk identification, stakeholder identification & analysis, change request analysis, retrospectives - with a bit of imagination, they can all become highly engaging.
Activities outside the project context. Any informal activities bowling, BBQ to name a few. Saving Changes...

Rami,
I have a diverse team so I use few techniques for team building.
- Team Potluck - It is a great way for team members to understand each other's culture. Food is a great motivator at the same time :)
- Sharing your pics from recent holiday
- Cultural holiday Poster is another good technique.
- Helping a non-profit: Go out and take the team together to help a non-profit. We have Oregon food bank where we go as a team and help pack food items.

Because the places I worked and I am working I have to deal with lot of theories, related training and everything you can imagine about it. The only thing that matters is that you as project manager must create a team from a group or just in case you have to work with a group like it would be a team. The difference between a group and a team is that the last one has an objective in common and go for it. That´s all that matters. Is up to you to use techniques and methods to achieve that. All the other things, in my personal experience, as wasted of time. Time ago I wrote an article that was published by the PMI about how Chicago Bulls (in Michael Jordan time) perform as a team on the court where outside the courts they are close to be enemies.
