I have a group of students heading to take the CAPM test, but when they found out they had to take the test over again to get re-certified, they are wondering if they should wait, get their requirements ready to take the PMP.

In Summary, none of the students (new practitioners) wants to take a CAPM every three years to get re-certified.

Thoughts?

I mean seriously, have anyone obtained CAPM, and the obtained the PMP and have sitted for the CAPM recertification test and at the same time maintained his PDU's for PMP?

It's just a question, but I guess most people would just forget about the CAPM (loose the cert) and focus on maintaining their PMP.

It seems a fair question that they're posting. Our demand for Project Management here is very high, so the discussion for all these students is fair enough.

Don't get me wrong.

Rami - Thanks for clarifying it is 5 years not 3 years, students will be happy with this new info. http://www.pmi.org/certification/certified...ement-capm.aspx

Rami and Markus - the only final inquiry is: Assuming they take the CAPM and then pursue the PMP. QUESTION: After I they gget their PMP, do they still have to take the CAPM test over and over every 5 years?
In my opinion. No because PMP is the advanced level of CAPM and if they get it then it supercedes it so there is no need for re-certification.

Rami - Thanks.

If this is true Rami, then I will advise them all to go forward and take the CAPM exam now, and in 1 year or, prepare for the PMP exam. Hence, they won't have to re-certify in CAPM if they obtain the PMP before their 5 years is up.

Hope it's the best suggestion to my students.

Thanks again...

Hello George,

like Rami already said it is just not necessary to maintain CAPM if you already have gained the PMP.

That would be a good advice to your students. The CAPM test only has 150 multiple choices while the PMP test has 200 multiple choices. It is much easier to pass the CAPM test. Also, students with CAPM certification would definitely have more opportunities to get PM-related experiences. With these practical experiences, it would be much easier for them to continue working on the PMP certification.

I agree with the tips above; very good to pass on to people hoping to get PMP certified.

I have also noticed that people start preparing for PMP exam/certification very determined but eventual fall off due to the daily hassles of life. Before you know they might start procrastinating in order to meet the exam requirements until they find out it is taking a longer time than expected to get there. CAPM would definitely be a simpler exam to take while they get those requirements and experience needed to prepare and get certified for PMP.

My students are 2 weeks away of taking their CAPM, I followed the group suggestions and they as well followed my advise. I'll let you know of their success.

Thanks for the help

Certainly there is some testing anxiety to consider if you have to re-take the test every three years. But you should also consider the amount of preparation needed to obtain the PMP certification.

If the primary job function is project management, it may be worth the extra effort to prepare for the PMP exam. If the primary function is something else within the project team, or if you are a project coordinator, then the CAPM is the way to go since the depth of the subject requires so much more intensive study.

It's 5 years, which makes the decision easier. Key information.
