I have a group of students heading to take the CAPM test, but when they found out they had to take the test over again to get re-certified, they are wondering if they should wait, get their requirements ready to take the PMP.

In Summary, none of the students (new practitioners) wants to take a CAPM every three years to get re-certified.

Thoughts?

I think the CAPM is a great introduction, I would have made it like junior Engineer here. You have the CAPM until you can demonstrate the experience. A full PMP exam, then experience.
That is less revenues for PMI!

Thanks George for posting the question and thank you all for such useful advise. I myself being a junior PM, found this conversation so very helpful.

I would have done the PMP if had to do it over again — as I had more than met PMP requirements. Still I learned a lot about how I would have been more efficient in past projects and I continue to do well in current endeavors..
