I have more than 11 years in IT industry (all in the technical role but also involving some aspects of project management and also people management). I am currently working as Technical Lead in India and I want to kick start my career in project management but not sure how to make the transition? Any suggestions? Currently am preparing for appearing in CAPM exams and also plan to undertake PMP soon

I would suggest to start taking responsibilities as well of PM along with studying for CAPM. Because experience is ultimate educator and this will simplify much of your understanding of PM concepts while reading PMBOK.

Talk to your peers, project manager, stakeholders in PM language

Read a lot about PM (case studies, papers, blogs)

apply your learning in daily work at office.

A couple of suggestions to add to Saurabh's:
* Join a local PMI chapter if available, and get involved
* Volunteer project management services probono

Why are you doing the PMP and CAPM back to back?

If you qualify for the PMP go for it - if you do not then you can only take the CAPM now and the PMP when you have enough experience.

My point is mostly about time and cost. Your approach will cost you more and will take more of your time - time you can invest into other activities such as self-learning and what the other colleagues are suggesting.

I'm with Mounir on this one. CAPM is for project team members. PMP is for project managers.
