Managing projects require having KNOWLEDGE on various areas of project management. But to be able to execute the project, the human being called project manager also needs to have various SKILLS. Knowledge can be gained, while Skills need to be developed.

What kind of a Body of Skills is available that should supplement the Project Management Body of Knowledge? Is it required? How can skill standards be set and tested?

What you are looking for, based on my understanding of your message, is competence. Check out IPMA and GAPPS - in my view they are the leader in this area.

Hi Gopal,
the (technical PM) skills required for a project manager (and tested throughtghe PMP exam) are outlined in the Exam Content Outline of PMI. Downloadable for free.
Mounir is right that PMI does not yet have a detailed grip on competences. But I assume it will come with the elaboration on the talent triangle.

Take a look to PMIs Competency Framework here:
Project Manager Competency Development Framework—Second Edition
And there is a lot about this topic inside the PMI site.

Sergio, you are correct, there is more from PMI.
I would wait some weeks, the 3rd edition is due in Q2 2016, the current 2nd edition is from 2007 and some things changed.

Just to clarify my comment. I am not saying that the PMI´s Competence Framework is a "definitive guide". But I think that is a good point of reference. But if you do not follow the PMI way then as Mounir said IPMA is the leader in this area. I found that you can convine IPMA and PMI with no problem.

In agreement with our Gurus Thomas and Segio - PMI has the PMCDF (Project Manager Competency Development Framework) but as Thomas pointed out it is from a few years back.

IPMA have just update their competence baseline and now they have ICB and OCB (Individual Competence Baseline and Organizational Competence Baseline) and they are good - extensive. The PMI talent triangle is probably "borrowing" from IPMA.

GAPPS also have Project Manager Standard

The nice thing about IPMA and GAPPS is that you can download their standards even if you are not a member.
