Sample tests enabled me to get used to the syntax of the questions. And to get used to the 4 hours allowed. In my preparations i worked up to 200 questions in a session. I put the time into the study and preparation and the sample exams as a guide to when I thought I was ready. Once I got around 80% consistently I booked in for the real test.

There is no fixed set of number of sample questions that one take before PMP. I would recommend to take minimum of 3 full 200 question exam and ensure we get minimum 85% correct before you can real PMP exam.

I think there should be as many questions as possible to handle. The one may know the theory and the practice very well, but this would not guarantee passing the exam. Exam is the different story that has to have its own preparation strategy. And the best strategy is to take as many sample tests as one can. Though the real exam questions differ from what we can find in different sources, but still such practice gives an understanding of the logic of exam answers, experience and confidence. A great amount of them.
We shall not focused in a specific number but rather on your personal study strategy: which areas i should focus on, do i already understood this process...?
However, if we are talking about a number i would say a minimum of 2.000 questions covering all the processes.

For most certifications, the general guide I follow is to be able to consistently be able to get 80% of questions correct when it is my first time going through them. Saving Changes...
I answered close to 800 questions before taking the exam with variying levels of difficulty. I think one should aim for around 90% to 95% in case of easy questions and 85% for tough questions.
The difficulty level is given in the question bank normally. Saving Changes...
