I would like to know thoughts on how transition and transformation are different and how does a organization manage both to give better value add for customers. Or how you have implemented the same in your organization.

Transition comes first. You have to transition in order to transform. As any other initiative take into account your whole enterprise architecture because you will have lot of impacts depending on the type of transition and transformation you will do.

the Ideal response to the Q- Difference between transition and transformation Would be a clear segregation of the Objectives and actions in each stage ..

Unless that is clarified , I would believe that the question remains Unanswered

Interesting question. We as an organization are questioning that very thing at the moment, and the answer for us is - we are "transforming".

In My View, Transition is moving from one system or Location or Product Architecture to another.

While transformation is a redesign of the processes or systems or Architecture to another one.
In a typical Outsourcing Scenario, Transition is between support providers or vendors or products while transformation is when you adapt or refine or redesign processes and systems to improve or optimize or save.

In this regard I would recommend the suggestion from Sergio.

Saurabh -

Transition should come first because it is the process of changing from one state to another desired state. While Transformation refers to the actual outcome due to transition.

I concur with Sergio.

Transition - the process or a period of changing from one state or condition to another.
Whereas Transformation is outcome - marked change in present state. Transition is journey and Transformation is a result of that journey !!

Old thread... but I just joined PMI community.
Using some semantic, the difference between transition and transformation to me resonates like "become better" vs. "become different".
You become better by using for instance agile methodologies or Kanban methods. The approach really focuses on continuous improvement.
You become different when you cut with the past and embrace for instance new technologies. A greenfield ERP implementation would be a good example of transformation.
I also believe it's an AND-story. Companies need both over time as transition and transformation phases alternate in an endless cycle. Doing more of the same has an end-date and invites at a given moment in time to do things differently to support for continued growth.
Hope this clarifies?

In the area of outsourcing world, transition covers to taking the services and solutions as is ans start supportIng without causing much discomfort to users, while transformation aims at adding value for users by technology upgrade or improved feature deployment while taking over the existing services and solutions for a given client.
