Good employees are proactive and look for ways to improve how they conduct business. They try and have a positive influence on those around them and in find ways to be more efficient and effective. Essentially, they care. However, at times they move fast and others feel threatened or challenged by this proactive approach. This tends to break this entrepreneurial spirit resulting in reduced motivation and production. What are areas or practices to assist these motivated employees thrive and survive in a culture of encumbered bureaucracy?

I often find myself in the very situation you describe, Michael. Some of the things you can look into:
* Build continuous improvement in your day-to-day activities and projects
* Offer to help out on business development work
* Volunteer to help for staff events
* Look for learning/growing opportunities outside work

Very difficult for such employees to survive in such company. And 8 out 10 will surely leave such organization.

However, why try and change behavior of such a motivated employee. Instead why not change behavior of others who feel threatened or challenged by this proactive approach. Why not give the same performance KPI's for both type of employees. Why not ask the less motivated employees to perform and show results same as the very motivated employee.

Further to motivate this very efficient employee try and set his/her work as benchmark within the project. This will give them the needed encouragement to thrive more in the organization.
