It has been about 3 months since I started actively using
projectmanagement.com. While I read articles & blogs, and checkout webinars & templates, I currently spend most of my time answering questions on PMCentral and reading others' responses. I learn as much, if not more, than I contribute.

How do you use projectmanagement.com? What has been your favorite thing to do?

It is a great source of information and also gives me several opportunities to connect with people of similar interests/area.
It is platform to both new & experienced project management professional to gain and share the ideas respectively. One may not get the job through this portal but one definitely stays in touch with project management ideas & developments in the field.

PM.com has provided a great platform for networking, vast amounts of knowledge in multiple formats such as webinars, blogs, presentations, articles and it's much easier to report PDU's. I believe this is a great platform and I hope it continues to improve, I can't speak highly enough about this website.

I sated using PM at the start of the year principally to attend webinars to build up my hours for amy PMP. I have actually found it a great resource for some interesting articles and blogs plus some great questions being posed here in PM Central.

I am not certified yet, nor a paid member (unemployed and barely holding up mortgage) ; yet reading and chatting is helping my entire PMP experience, learning more of a logical progression to use. BUT unfortunately, I am now so intimidated by all the professioals, and the requirements, and the money involved for a status, that I am sadly dropping from the PM job market, and going elsewhere. All the job postings are filtered now. No one enjoys or wants face-toface interview, just keywords, and most of the postings are recycled postings from one recruiter to another.
I have 4 books, ones we should have, and still auditing a class, and will always use PMBOK as a guide now. But most of you have been in the positions for more than 10-30 years, and are quite influencial. So as life goes on, and you can assert influence, remind corporations and recruiters and especially Human Resources to get back to using the human tongue instead of sitting reading a magazine and waiting for software to say there's a job match.
I have started two personal projects and a self-employed business using all the guidelines promoted by PMI and PMBOK so maybe before Im dead, I can afford and pass the test. I will try once the CAPM so all my effort if I pass, isnt for naught.
GOOD LUCK ALL !

Steve,

Sorry to hear about your disappointments. For better or worse, times are changing, and as long as your foundational values and integrity are not being compromised, I don’t see why you shouldn’t entertain the approach of further tailoring resume to get those software hits for the recruiters to notice. I also don’t think that this is the only way recruiters get their candidates… the old fashioned way works through networking, so if you know someone that knows someone that knows a recruiter, then the software hits shouldn’t matter. I would encourage you to keep pursuing both the paths.

Without personally understanding your situation in more detail, I cannot comment on how I/us/this site could have assisted you further. Private career counseling does cost money, but perhaps programs through governmental Labor and Employment Development departments could relieve this and offer guidance.

I hope you do stick around on this site because I see you have been actively participating in the discussions and have insights to offer. Regardless, best wishes to you in everything. I hope you find a breakthrough soon.

I agree with Samuel, the best way to find a job these days is actually through networking which is one of the many things this site offers. I will probably get banned from the site for saying this but don't put too much weight in the certifications. More and more organizations are finding that it's become too easy to buy your credentials and the ones that screen entirely on certifications are likely lower on the PM maturity scale. None of my PMs have certifications and they do an outstanding job. You may also want to consider expanding your search and looking at Business Analyst positions. This is a position that commonly transitions into PM and often you can demonstrate some of your PM skills during the BA processes and get recognized for career growth opportunities. Good luck on your search.
