Once identified, how do you plan training for your team? Does this really boost the productivity and efficiency?

Training will definitely help given you make most out of it. It will surely increase prod and eff but not unless you apply it.

Some people do just attend training to kill the time in office. So before you arrange a training for your team
1. make them aware about the importance of this training
2. how it will help them resolve issues in their work
3. what they will gain from it
4. what project will gain out of it.

1. I will suggest making a training objective and circulating it among the team.
2. Asking people to limit their questions specific to training objective
3. asking people to note down important points from the training
4. having a short exam at the end of the training to assess their understanding
5. having a short activity asking people to apply lesson learned from training in their work (you can keep awards and appreciation for this to encourage them)

Hopefully this should reap you benefits of training
