I have seen lots of comments indicating the challenges Brazil have facing hosting the Olympics. Please comment on this if you wish. But....

I have not seen many comments on the POSITIVE aspects of hosting such a great event. In terms of project opportunities and the expectation that it will contribute to the country growth as financial investments will benefit the country once Olympics is over.

Great opportunity for Projects, Project Managers and the country Project Management itself.

I believe this is very complicated to explain without take the political side and the political problems that we have here.

The Olympics just came at a bad time. We must first clean the dirt with our politic before host events like this.
"The Olympics just came at a bad time."

The Olympics were decided well before all the political brouhaha happened.

Anonymous - thanks for your comments.

So in summary, you're saying that this would benefit PM's in Brazil?
Dear George,

The Anonymous was me, for some reason that I ignore my name was omitted.

Not only the project management community, but also marketing, ITC, tourism and engineering professionals were benefited from the games.

Michalick - So, in general terms for Brazil, do you consider this a good opportunity for Project Managers?
Countrywise is it positive for the Project Management area?
Any event of such magnitude is a good *opportunity*. It has the potential for short and long term jobs, infrastructure improvements, tourism... What's is made of the opportunity and how well it is usually what gets the public opinion going haywire.

In short, what Ivo, Farhad and Adilson said.

Dear George, the challenge of the Olympics Games in Rio, to me, it's the same when we talk about the challenge and influence of the culture or music in our lives.

It's so difficult convince all that is a good purpose but in the end, we will develop the best Olympics Games to the evolution of human race. We need believe in this objectives, it's a great opportunity to project managers too and they are working in games a long time until now. Here in our intercontinental country there are many problems to solve, but like a old famous sound in Brazil says: "... We do not want just food... We want food... Entertainment and Art... we do not want just food... We want to drink... fun and ballet" (A gente não quer só comida, a gente quer comida, diversão e arte... A gente não quer só comida, a gente quer bebida, diversão, ballte - Titãs).

So, I think all PM's in Rio are working there to help and do the best in this complex multi-stakeholder programme, like prof. Farhad show us. Then, I agree with Farhad and Adilson with the good perspective and legacy that Olympic Games will impact our country, specially because we are living one great political and economical crise, right now. The Olympics will show us that is possible look forward like we already do in the past. And in the end, the Project Managers who worked there will have a project/program to remember and show in their profile and many lessons learning to share with others in their lives.

The Olympics are a big thing to the city of Rio, not to Brazil, the comment is correct and I agree with Ivo M. Michalick Vasconcelos, the Olympics dont have a project structure and to the Brazilian army wants to leave the city.

Unfortunately they did not use a process, and the invested money was stolen big part.
Dear Oscar,

I think that you are not well-informed. The State and City of Rio de Janeiro have the second biggest GNP of Brazil and any development in that metropolis has a positive influence on the overall Brazilian economy. The city of Rio alone has 8 million people and the boost related to Olympic games have maintained the rate of the economic activities and unemployment is lower that other parts of Brazil, affected by recession.

Both the Games and the related infrastructure program have PROJECT structure staffed with local and international PM experts. My friend and Guru José Finocchio Jr was one of them who helped organize the PM methodology for the Olympic Committee.

I invite you to visit the sites to see for your self such as:

The structure of Olympic Committee planned management of the Olympics legacy. This as lessons learned from the "Pan-American games" in 2007.

We have a crisis in the economy and government but the games should take place as planned with a satisfactory level.

Security and infrastructure are in final testing. For example, the international airport is being monitored by the army.

The olympic committee has employed many people in this crisis environment.

Hi guys.
The Brazil live a difficult moment in your economic and I believe that a event this proportion is very important to improve in some aspects, but the planning, risks, structure, communication and other points need to more attention.

I see that the big problem is the planning, oh my god, is very bad!
The services that are active and running are stopping, routes changed "maybe" monthly, the building and preparation is slow, the traffic is horrible, is a crazy situation because don't have planning.

I believe that Brazil has a big opportunity in the hands, but needs to improve in a lot of aspects before support a event on this proportion.

I agree with Farhad, when he talks about "dozens of professionals working in the Rio 2016 games who have served in two or more games before. Much of the ITC parts are repeatable (CAPGEMINI was involved in the last three games) and the volunteer programme is entirely repeated from one to the other.
In other words, much of programme, project and risk management frameworks apply."
In my opinion the Rio Olympic Games is a great opportunity to improve our knowledge and experience in complex multi-stakeholder programs. In other hand I believe that It is not our best moment for that. Brazilian people are living a very unstable and insecurity moment. Most of us is more focused in "survival" and an event like Olympic Games don't fit in this scenario. I really sorry about we are having a so big opportunity, like the Olympics in Rio, in a moment that It is not a priority in our lifes.
