I have seen lots of comments indicating the challenges Brazil have facing hosting the Olympics. Please comment on this if you wish. But....
I have not seen many comments on the POSITIVE aspects of hosting such a great event. In terms of project opportunities and the expectation that it will contribute to the country growth as financial investments will benefit the country once Olympics is over.
Great opportunity for Projects, Project Managers and the country Project Management itself. Saving Changes...

Hi Farhad,
Yes I can, but before, just for clarification, I'm talking about projects that are delayed and once it can't be delivered before the games, they were put on hold for the sake of mobility.
See below two links (in portuguese) with details of major projects now on hold:
Thank you for the like, however I have to clarify that the Subway (Metro) extension was not a part of requirements and SOW of Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The main challenges of such project is schedule constraint. The start of the event CAN NOT be delayed. The Olympic events have to start on a definite time. Apart from the fact, Brazil is currently facing, this is really challenging Saving Changes...
The schedule is really a challenge, but we cannot see if the games are good or bad without considering politics, because the government ruling Brazil today is one the most important stakeholders of the program.
The schedule of many things were not met because of the corruption of the government, The embezzlement for many projects ruined many plans, the organization and security may have critical flaws, and I don't believe that giving more jobs will help once we reach the olympic games and it becomes a huge mess with fights, protests and robbery without control. The chances are not that low for that to happen, and if it happens NOTHING can clean the stain that the games will make.
Also, we are not considering the current fight between UBER and TAXI that impacts directly in the olympic games, the laws that are being implemented just now for the olympics and people getting frustrated about them and the fact that Brazil has NEVER dealt with real terrorist attacks (but I know they are planning a lot to prepare for that).
In summary, for me it was not a good idea then, it is not a good idea now. Saving Changes...
Currently, Brazil is experiencing a major economic and political crisis (one with reflection on the other), so there's a part of the population does not agree with the Olympic Games, understanding that there are other serious problems to be dealt with by the Brazilian Government.
However, the decision of the host city of the Olympic Games takes place several years before, and at that time Brazil was enjoying a much better time economically, and the choice was celebrated.
What many do not realize is that in this time of crisis, the Olympic Games have created, and will still keep for at least for one year more, thousands of jobs, including jobs for project managers.
In addition to the Olympic Games is transforming Rio de Janeiro. A number of development works and urban mobility were forced to be carried out to enable the Olympic Games happen in the city.
I am an enthusiast of major events like this, as they bring positive results, unfortunately, are not always perceived by all.
Moreover, we can not forget the principles of peace and unity among peoples, which are brought by Olympic Games.
I cannot disagree anything. Saving Changes...

I understand that there were many gaps between planning and execution of works for the Olympics program 2016, and mainly due to political and administrative problems and errors, which should bring results of none sustainability for after the Olympics games, generating a catastrophe in the public accounts and even to the event, next month, such as mobility and security that are undefined. It really is a great opportunity for Brazil, however at a time nothing appropriate. The country is going through a time of crisis in various aspects and a complex project like this requires not only a challenge because of the difficulty of communication, planning and risks, but to see that the olympic project has been more prioritized that education and health Brazil.
Hello George,
I believe this is a major opportunity for Brazil, certainly the Olympic Games bring great opportunity and despite everything happening in Brazil, often in the midst of crisis is appearing the best opportunities.
Thanks for the comments. Saving Changes...

George,
I absolutely agree with you. Most of comments about Brazil hosting the Olympics are NEGATIVE. As a brazilian citizen I may tell you that this is motivated mainly by the recent scandals involving bribes, corruption, politics and big local engineering and construction companies. Further more, most of infrastructure built for the olympics are facing both cost AND schedule overruns what does not match with project management best practices. Issues related to security and tropical diseases are also in the top of problems list widely reported by the media.
It is sad but those kind of news have a strong power to dictate how people behave and most part of brazilian population is not supporting the olympics anymore.People try to erase the olympic torch in the streets and more than 1/3 of tickets for the games have not been sold yet.
We all expect that when the Olympics is over, its contribution may benefit the country growth and create business and job opportunities.
Best regards,

Dear George,
I think yes, the Olympic Games are a set of challenging projects.
Recently, the mayor of the city of Rio de Janeiro told to the press that the Olympics would be a opportunity lost, although this is his main responsibility. unfortunately it seems to be right. What I have seen and following by the press is a lot of projects ending out of time, with over cost (in some cases more than 50%), and low or poor final quality. In the hosting industry, the offer of accommodation, from all I know, will be lower than planned. Although when they announced that the Olympic Games would be in Rio de Janeiro, the same mayor announced that new hotel constructions would be issued. This didn't happened. In short, in terms of management, as the Mayor said, this event is a great opportunity lost, at least in terms of a chance to improve our project management practices. I would venture to point the main cause of all of this mass that's an excessive government involvement in all initiatives that, in my view, should be better handed by private initiative. The public management could not absorb the precepts of modern project management.
So that's what I see from Project Management point of view. I hope had been helpful and enlightening your questions. I'm at your disposal to answer any other questions if necessary.
Hi George, thanks for inviting me in!
I remember when i was taking the PMP exam at PROMETRICS center in Rio and met some applicants that were project managers at Deodoro site, one of the competition venues. From that perspective we can see that this major event has undoubtedly given much impulse to the project management as profession here in Brazil.
There are however a few setbacks and my major frustration is that we didn´t solve the Guanabara bay polluted waters issue which would be our major legacy for the future generations. Nevertheless, final outcome will be positive and i am certain that brazilian team will be competitive at the games and Rio, our marvellous city, will deliver a great show to all sports fans!
