I have seen lots of comments indicating the challenges Brazil have facing hosting the Olympics. Please comment on this if you wish. But....

I have not seen many comments on the POSITIVE aspects of hosting such a great event. In terms of project opportunities and the expectation that it will contribute to the country growth as financial investments will benefit the country once Olympics is over.

Great opportunity for Projects, Project Managers and the country Project Management itself.

Dear George,

It is heartbreaking that my Brazilian compatriots have so much prejudice about the Rio2016 Games.

Nowadays, the Brazilians tend to look at the reality with lenses totally biased by their political beliefs. Of course, the political turmoil explains a great part of it, but I believe that there is also a lot of lackof informed opinion expressed here and elsewhere.

This event has been and continues to be a learning experience for project management community.
Dear Farhad,

So far I would sign bellow practically everything you commented on this topic. But I take exception with your generalization ("Nowadays, the Brazilians tend to look at the reality with lenses totally biased by their political beliefs."). I believe myself and many Brazilians (like yourself, for that matter!) can see "shades of gray" instead of "black and white",I believe political and economical issues are by nature very complex and multifaceted, no absolutes here :) As for the Olympics, I have a feeling that they will be a great success in may aspects, even more than the World Cup in 2014. And the legacy, due to the fact that the games will be concentraded mostly in Rio, tends to be huge and positive!

Totally agreed, IVO!

There more than 50 shades of grey, but a lot of people who have commented here prove also my thesis.

Dear George,

According to literature and best practices, Olympic Games is considered a complex multi-stakeholder programme.
Ever since we applied to host the games I am following its consequences in our PM community as well as Brazilian economy. And more so, now that I am a volunteer for the games as International Olympics Family Assistant. I will serve probably the head of Iranian delegation based on my background.

On the positive upside effects, the games are responsible for lower unemployment rates as well as lower impact of the recession. The infrastructure legacy is huge and the benefits started to be realized by the population as the mobility assets and some stadia became available. Rio has been entirely transformed and the legacy will last for decades.

On the downside, the political and economic crises have reduced a part of the glamour and pride of hosting the games. Zica out burst and persistent criminality rates are a concern. The authorities did not solve the environmental issues.

but, overall I am confident that The Games will be a success, and already we have lots of project and risk management related lessons learned.
More than meets the eye!

Dear Josemar,

The survey that you've given us the link proves that the perceptions (and not the real benefits) have deteriorated from 2013 to 2016.

As I said in a prior post, people tend to see the reality with their biased ideological lenses.

Hello George.

Thanks for your message. This kind of event naturally brings lots of challenges. However, I think Rio de Janeiro will be able to face and overcome any major problem that shows up during the Olimpic Games.

I know the country is facing a significant economic crisis. I´m also aware that there are some adjustments to be made until the Games start. However, I see everyday the preparation in terms of security and infrastructure the leadership team is making to make this event a success.

Regards,

Luis

Hosting the Olympic Games is not merely a sporting endeavor, but is an undertaking that is fraught with political, socio-cultural and economic pressures. Aligning these pressures with reputational issues for the multitude of event stakeholders, most notably the bidding city, if not properly managed as a mega project, can create a "perfect storm", which could result in poor decision making, destructive loss of reputational capital for stakeholders (particularly on Rio de Janeiro) and potentially the delivery of a failed Olympic Games. On the
positive side have been a limited number of games that have demonstrated successful delivery of the games, profitability and medium to long-term regional sustainable infrastructure development, with corresponding gain in reputational
capital to Brazil.

actually I think this is the worst time ever for hosting the games here. Brazil is in the middle of it worst economical and political crisis. Rio de Janeiro is violent as it has never been before. Even terrorists know they cannot come here and face the drug dealers who rule the city. We need ingrastr Projects all over the country. We need a real government.
