I have seen lots of comments indicating the challenges Brazil have facing hosting the Olympics. Please comment on this if you wish. But....

I have not seen many comments on the POSITIVE aspects of hosting such a great event. In terms of project opportunities and the expectation that it will contribute to the country growth as financial investments will benefit the country once Olympics is over.

Great opportunity for Projects, Project Managers and the country Project Management itself.

Carlos Jansson Sr. Project Manager| WPP ET São Paulo, Sp, Brazil
Hi George,

Indeed, the Olympics in Brazil was a great challenge to Project Managers who had the oporttunity to work with the big contracts that were signed. But, considering the political and economical crisis caused by corrupted governments and politicians, has changed the citizen mind about this event. People are not so happy with this, because the basic services, as Public Health, Education and Security were affected by the absence of budget to support these, so many people are feeling its consequences.

If you remember the World Cup in 2014, the same feeling was demonstrated by many people, considering the corruption scandals that were announced by Justice and Press before and after that event.

Unfortunately, considering all those facts, Brazilian people are more focused in the dignity rescue to this Country.

Regards,

Carlos Jansson - PMP / Prince2

To heat our discussion:
It is true that the economic and political situation in Brazil is difficult, which makes the population (part of stakeholders) have a negative view of the Olympic Games.
However, it is undeniable that this is an opportunity for the country, boosting infrastructure and mobility projects, heating tourism and trade, in addition to leaving many lessons learned in relation to the management of a large program like this.
Then we can ask some questions:
There is a failure in the management of stakeholders? Communication with stakeholders to show/sell the positive aspects of the event is not suitable and / or working?
What do you think?

It is a great point. BR Government is trying to improve the perception people have from Olympics, but they're not the best drivers for that as people do not trust the government. So there should be a 3rd party broadly communicating how careful organization is, the risk mitigation plans, the ROI analysis etc

Dear Mr. Lewis

Thanks for the contact and the invitation to discuss about olympics in Brasil. I believe that Olympic games it's a great opportunity to  improve the turistic industry in Rio de Janeiro.  So answering your question in part and trying to be positive  I can say we  can have a good return from this event. But there are more aspects to explain. About project opportunities,  a lot of projects related to sport places, transport infraestructure and other turistic places have been built  so  the project management community are happy ... maybe the politcs are happy too  but .... wait ...  who is paying the bill ? The rich people in Brasil ?  ...Of course the locals  have huge social problems and priorities that have been placed in the second place by the politics ... as always,  so a lot of people are concerned and even displeased with this situation. Simple like that. I wish to all olimpic family a happy  event. Regards.

Well, as a positive comment, I think that the Olympics are a "Good Will" Event, but the complex of the non-athletes are too big, so is so hard to control. Well, Brazil and the world economic are not in the best days. Maybe in tree weeks we will know how much problems the will have to sort, begging with economical restrictions to the project management, Do they have PMP, PMO´s in the organization group?

I have some mixed opinions for the Olympics. For instance. I am a volunteer for the games and I am quite excited with it. Is such great opportunity to help out on this project and meet people from all over the world. On the other hand the volunteer program had not been so friendly from the beginning and I am only joining it because I do live in Rio.

And here comes the second point. As a citizen the Olympics are just a major disturbance since the city structure is unable to cope the such a demanding event. This project is also very little inclusive with its major stakeholders, the Rio's community, who is being managed is an obstacle instead of a partner.

The overall benefits of the games are negative I believe. The costs are too great for such a poor country as Brazil and the economic outcomes are temporally and poorly exploited. The so called 'legacy' is clearly irrelevant and the Olympics will have little to no effect on most of the Brazilian population. I am sure that the games will be a successful event, but not a successful project.

There are both positive and negative legacy aspects from the Olympics and for PMs: It should have been a great opportunity, but it is revealing itself as not being quite so; please George watch for Brazilian news as judge it for yourself (e.g.: the news about the Australian delegation from yesterday). I believe, for PMs, that the major aspect shall be the Lessons Learned. There will be several.

Now there is no way to see positive things about olympics if you see the truth. Please read:

We face a Games beset by security issues, political turmoil, the Zika virus, doping sagas and more.

Islamic State was checked with plans to conduct attacks during the Rio Games. Current crime wave in the city of Rio was never short, and it continues to grow.

The Brazilian government's promise of a security force of 85,000 troops offers little comfort, particularly in a country where most other promises surrounding the Olympic Games have fallen well short in delivery.

Impeachment took President Dilma Rousseff off the table. In the space of a couple of months the sports minister, health minister and head of the national force for public security all resigned.

Health concerns are also a big issue. The mixed reporting of the Zika virus has left many potential visitors and Olympic athletes confused.

Many of the world's top 20 golfers have pulled out of the Games, some of whom cite Zika as the reason. Golf courses and mosquitos go hand in hand.

Like the police, health workers have also complained of not being paid. The health system is described as being at crisis point in Rio.

The hospital nominated as the go-to facility for international visitors was recently the scene of a gang-related shootout.

Russia is on the dopping issue with others.

Two skydivers fell to their deaths while attempting, with 26 others, to form the Olympic rings in an effort to hype the Games. A real jaguar, standing in for the Olympic mascot at a torch relay event, was shot dead by a police officer when it escaped its leash after the ceremonies.

According to a Rio watchdog group, more than 77,000 families have been compelled to move to new homes to make way for Games construction, the Rio Olympics are over budget by 51%, and, as Amnesty International is cataloging, in the last year, there has been a 135% increase in police killings, all focused on the city’s poorest areas.

Australia has reported the structure of olympic "Villa" to be the worst ever visited, when the comitte told it was the best of all games. The mayor made a joke out of it. Other countries are also concerned.

Honestly, to see positive points in these olympic games is to drink mud saying to yourself it is champagne.
