I see two trends in this community. Some people tend to ask a lot of questions. Others tend to answer questions asked by others.

While both roles are necessary in any community, do you think people should tend towards one extreme? Or do you feel each person should contribute both ways?

I think, all three behaviours are valid, the two trends introduced by Stéphane as well as the third one of only reading/listening or doing nothing.
There is a time to ask when you need something to know and there is a time to answer to share your knowledge (or your opinion as I currently do).
And there is a time of only reading when you find answers already given to your questions.
About all the non-active members (in this case I mean the real nominal members): each community or forum have this kind of members. From my experience, if they are not interested you have no chance to get them involved and therefor I don't care about them. Sounds harsh but what should I do?

You have a point, Manfred. How can we care about people whom we don't know?

A Chinese proverb that fits this discussion:
"He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever."

I believe many people are too shy to ask a question where their name is attached and their competency as a PM could be called into question. They would rather answer questions where they can demonstrate their knowledge.
My point of view is that if I have tried to find an answer and it is impeding my progress not finding it, it is better to ask and be able to move forward.

Well, I was prompted to post a question versus answering here - just kidding. Personally, I posted a few questions only to learn it may have been asked in a prior post (I did not query on key words) thus, I enjoy replying. It is refreshing to see new people asking and answering on various threads. On a side note, I don't like the "Post Anonymously" option and have never used this. Perhaps its wise for people afraid of their employer catching them post while on work hours.

I agree that both roles are necessary. However for people like me who are new to the community I think getting used to the type of issues put forth in these forums and knowing more about the discussions and try to participate in them to understand the community culture is important.

It depends on the experience of each individual. But I think to have a community where we have the two ways of participating is great!

Contributing to community is important.
Answering someone helps then understand topic better or expose them to new ideas, which is helpful in their growth.

Sometimes we are in situation where we wish to have multiple opinions on a topic or we are in doubt so we ask our query which may be contributing a new view to community.

So I guess one should contribute in both ways.

First of all, sorry but my reply, is a little more long that I was expecting when I started to write. As an answer from my point of view each person should contribute as they feel more confident.

@George Lewis, mentioned something about the aggressive responses. Regarding this, I agree with @Stépane Parent, cultural differences are one point that we not only need to manage in our daily work environment, also in our behavior when we make a question, answer it or in general in this community.

Sometimes the English is not the native language (as in my case), and my answers or questions could be misunderstood. I usually try to verify my grammar, or use some neutral expressions, but not always it works as I would like.

@Mounir Agar, also made a reference about redundancy commentaries. Completely agree.

Did you realize that there are a lot of answers as Agree, Thank you, Sure.
From my point of view those answers could be substituted by one vote in the answer or question, but it seems that there are some people that are only worried about their influence rate, instead make real contributions to the community, but anyway is only my opinion without fundaments.

I’ve recognized that I used before this ¨Post anonymous¨ or during my first connections only read the questions or the answers. Why? Easy…I was shy, I felt that my contributions don’t have enough value compared with some of the contributors with a lot of experience, a lot of certifications, or huge number of contributions.

Finally I would like to encourage all the ¨shy¨ people to contribute, answer question, creating new discussions, all people is welcome and I’ve never felt ignored or ashamed about my questions or answers.
