What part of stakeholder management do you wish you knew more about (either now, or when you first started out)? For me it's about assertiveness and making sure my voice is heard even when stakeholders aren't keen on hearing it. Saving Changes...

I think that stakeholder management has to be understanding from two point of views: 1-Isaac Newton´s Laws of Motion, mainly the third law. 2-Reality is a subjective matter mainly related to people perception. That´s all.
Stakeholder management is a big deal, each project is different, each individual is different. From my point of view I plan, plan, plan...and after...depending on the project, update plan update plan. Saving Changes...

It's hard to deal with different expectations which key stakeholders might arbitrarily have. Meeting techniques, conflict resolution techniques, analytical techniques and data /information gathering techniques in stakeholders engagement should be well equipped whether they are explicitly stated in PMBOK. In the beginning it was very hard to get the real drivers of the stakeholders to understand why they acting in the way they did. It's getting better and better, but it's always a challenge.
Now the issue is more to anticipate how they will react to provide information or to act before they do. As Maria says, it's different with every person. But I emphasize planning lesser and lesser (maybe it's only, that it takes less time due to my growing experience), but more and more the doing (executing, monitoring, reacting) part of stakeholder management. Sometimes to the extend, that the written plan seldom gets updated - only the actual plan in mind. Not good for bigger project teams, but during last years, I often was involved in small core teams, where it worked good enough. Saving Changes...

From my experience it has been always challenging to keep the stakeholders "project focused". After projects are in execution some stakeholders tend to come back to a more functional view. In this case they try to address some project topics directly with the customers and to take commitments the project manager is not aware of or has not planned. So a continouous management of stakeholders to maintain them inside the borders of their project responsibilities is for me a critical point. Also the cultural aspects impact these because I have never had the same approach with my local french stakeholders and my international ones. Saving Changes...
