Hi I am from IT background .Here is my Question .Client raise a change request and it can be done within 4 hours using existing code in application. But the project manager wants to use advanced technology here and it may take 32 hours extra to finish. Can we consider it as gold plating ?

I guess the PM just need more time to fix the problem and back in his mind, the problem cannot be fixed in the agreed time thus he proposes a new approach which gives him more time to complete. I agree with Thomas that is it unethical.

I don't see this as gold plating. The customer has raised a change request... now it is between them and the performing organization to agree on the design - 'how' to do this. Shouldn't be an issue if there are in sync. Now if someone is misrepresenting the 4 hours as 32 hours without being transparent, then I would consider it an ethical issue
I agree with you Samuel, that this is not a gold plating. But then what about the testing the whole application, impact analysis. Are there any substantial changes to the other existing functionality with this change in place. Even though the superficially we can do any changes with in few minutes the testing and impact analysis takes lot of time. We clearly dont know if the manager has informed the team about the impact and necessary work involved.
