Organizing the Olympic Games is surely an enormous project. If you were now to be hired by the Brazil government to elucidate the project success, what would you look into? What KPIs would you use, if any? Share your thoughts!

I think there are thousands of KPIs can be implemented.
However, I believe the following KPIs very important:

1. Revenue vs. overhead cost
2. Ticket sales
3. Social media engagement
4. Monetary returns
5. Press and media coverage
6. Number of products sold at event
7. Company sales following the event
8. Sponsor Recognition
9. Attendee satisfaction
10. Profitability
11. Number of unresolved issues
12. Issues found by QA
13. Issues found by customers
14. Transportation Flow rate

During the Olympics, I often found myself wondering about the monumental effort/stress of being the head PM that has to make the Olympics happen. So, thanks for bringing up this topic. Would be interesting to hear from the PMs that have been involved in planning/execution of the Olympics. I just did a quick search online and found an interesting case study about the 2012 Olympic games. Link: http://aisel.aisnet.org/cgi/viewcontent.cg...ntext=ukais2010

While this paper doesn't directly address the question about KPIs, it mentions many interesting considerations involved in planning for the Olympics, so KPIs can be derived.

To define success, first we should know the objectives. Success for the International Olympic Comitee can be different from sucess as defined by the Brazilian government, or the audience, etc. Than we can use KPIs as the ones suggested above.

To mesure the success we should we at the objectives - Those of the IOC, those of Brazil, and some more.
Key stakeholder had object (business plan) in making the Olympic game in Rio de Janeiro, where they meet.
KPI's are to me more a measure a prediction of the future. In that case the project is done.

Hi Eduard, nice topic you brought in...

Is it possible to drilldown further like Events, Sponsor Managment, etc, so that KPI's can be clearly written.

1. No of Events on time
2. No.of Events delayed (to see the quality of organising and performance).

There are more i would like to contribute based on theme selected.

Thank you.

I agree with Mauro and Vincent. The success criteria for Brazilian government could be different from IOC's. Hence, apart from the events related KPI's, I would stress on economic factors e.g. 1. How much income has the overall project generated 2. Improvement in infrastructure 3. Increase in employment/jobs created 4. Crowd attendance to the stadia 5. Positive foreign media coverage
