Information in construction projects is becoming larger and significant. Project Managers depend more and more on different kinds of information to take actions and decisions about their daily tasks in projects.

However, neither the PMBOK Guide nor the construction extension includes standards or processes for dealing or integrating with managing information. The PMBOKĀ® Guide explain only about project information terminology and divides them to: Work performance data, Work performance information, and Work performance reports (Project Management Institute PMI, 2013, p. 58). There is no evidence about how to manage these dozens of information in a proper way. This insufficiency of information management can make allot of problems with the project and project team need to figure out ways to fix that.

I think that the PMBOK cannot satisfy all the needs arising in different industries in the sense of being a "cooking book". The essentials of information management are in line with the content of "communication management" because communication and information depend on each other. Acting as consultant for BIM strategies and in the role of an "Information Manager" the essentials of communication management help me a lot.

That's why PMI has produced extensions to the PMBOK. One of those is the Construction Extention, which was updated on 2007 to include the additional processes for this specific industry. From that date to now, there has been a huge developing in the AEC software's and technologies. Lately, what is called Building Information Modeling BIM. So BIM is all about the "I" which refer to information. And it deals with managing the construction information. That's why I believe that PMI needs to find out what's the BIM and information management areas that need to add to the Construction Extension to the PMBOKĀ® Guide and their effects on the current guide's processes and procedures are?

Knowledge Management .... http://www.kmworld.com/Articles/Editorial/...ined-82405.aspx

This is its own entity. It is not a thing, rather a way.
Thanks for sharing that link.
Second paragraph read
"Knowledge management is the process of capturing, distributing, and effectively using knowledge."
Each of the knowledge area is call "Project ...(knowledge)...Management", it is managing the information on that knowledge.
PMBOK don't need to go deeper, it doest tell you how to conduct a meeting, it tells you that you need meetings. Same should go here.

Saad, I would like to point out 3 things: 1. Information is critical part of all kind of projects, including construction projects. 2. PMBOK Guide has a whole KA dealing with information management - it is called Communication Management. 3. A new Executing process for managing knowledge has been added in PMBOK Guide 6th Edition. References from PMBOK Guide 5th ed. * First sentence of Comm. Mgmt. KA - "Project Communications Management includes the processes that are required to ensure timely and appropriate planning, collection, creation, distribution, storage, retrieval, management, control, monitoring, and the ultimate disposition of project information." * First sentence of 10.2 - "Manage Communications is the process of creating, collecting, distributing, storing, retrieving, and the ultimate disposition of project information in accordance to the communications management plan."

Dear Praveen,

Thank you for pointing out the points.
I agree with you that information nowadays is very critical to construction projects.

Regarding point two, which is communication management is responsible for dealing with information management. Yes, to a certain extent because other knowledge areas are also dealing on how to manage the information. Probably as you said, communication management in PMBOK is focusing more than the other KAs.

Probably I need to focus more on 10.1.2.2 Communication Technology and show how Building Information Modeling BIM processes and standards can benefit the PMBOK Guide construction extension.

Could you please elaborate more on the new Executing process for managing knowledge which has been added in PMBOK Guide 6th Edition.

Thank you.

Hi Saad,

PMI released a draft version of 6th ed. but I did not look at it in detail. I just know that there is a new executing process in Integration KA. I will read it once they publish it.

May someone who has read draft version can answer your Q.

BR.
