I'm looking for some guidance. When I looked at the definitions of the PfPM, PgPM and PMP my background and current role is more aligned with PfMP. Since this PMI certification is relatively new, information on how to prepare for it is more limited and it is less known by government recruiters and procurement specialists (at least in Canada). Most of the requirements are for PMP even if the role is more in line with PfMP or PgMP. Does anyone know if in these situation it is viewed as equivalent (or better) than PMP? Does anyone have recommendation on how to prepare for the certification test?

Thank you
Richard

I strongly believe the project management is the foundation to understand PMI standards to execute project/program/portfolio. Organizations are having different policies and procedures in operating Program and Portfolios. However project management process groups and knowledge areas are common in all P3.
When it comes to certification PMP, PgMP and then PfMP or directly doing PfMP is individual’s choice in my opinion however PMP is preferred.

Definite yes to PMP first. In order to manage program or portfolio, again you need to understand and apply project management well to efficiently perform in those roles. PMP provides you that strong foundation and base so that other certifications can be built on.

Doing a PMP first will give you the fundamentals and the culture of the PMI-PMP standards. Probably the best approach and also easier if you are already working in the lines of PfMP. My opinion.

I currently have PMP for several years and recently did PMI-ACP as the focus now is on Agile Methodologies. I am looking at both PfMP, and PgMP as my next choice of certification. Both of them have slightly different knowledge bases. Several Program Management positions indicate PgMP as a preferred certification over PMP. I have not come across a position that specifically asked for PfMP. However, from a practice perspective, PfMP is more aligned with executive roles. Your choice should depend on whether you would like to pursue a certification for building knowledgebase to better perform in your current role or looking for a credential to land a better job. I have been in executive roles and performed most of PfMP and PgMP functions. In my opinion, it depends on what you are expecting from these certifications. I am vacillating between PgMP and PfMP but PfMP is suited for higher executive roles.

Any additional thoughts?

As per my experience and opinion, PgMP leads to wards CIO path. Portfolio is again for same path, but depends upon requirement of organization. Currently I am planning to attempt PgMP and DASSM. Please suggest.

For a Senior Manager to be effective in his/her role it is mandatory to have the root knowledge or let's say the base knowledge firmly in.

I would consider PMP as the root or base of PgMP and PfMP. When the roots are strong the tree grows strong and sustains long. Other certifications from PMI are excellent supplements in their respective fields (Risk, Schedule, Agile etc).

The eligibility for PgMP would be :
Prerequisites: Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or the global equivalent)
-6,000 hours of project management experience
-10,500 hours of program management experience
or
Four-year degree
6,000 hours of project management experience
6,000 hours of program management experience
And the price would be:
Member: US$800.00
Non-member: US$1,000.00

I am PMP Certified in March 2018, and I intend to do also PfMP certificate, because it match to my job as "Project Portfolio Manager".

Can anybody guide me to the steps till reaching for the PfMP credential. My major concerns are below:

1- Which PfMP study guide should I use to pass it, is it "Standard of 2013" or "Standard of 2017" ? and when the PfMP exam of Standard 2013 will be changed in 2018?

2- In my PMP exam, I used both PMBOK v5 and Rita v8 as references for study till reaching for the PMP credential. So that for PfMP certificate, which support documents/references can I use to ensure passing the exam successfully?

3- I need to get material hard-copy in both "English and Arabic" languages for my future reference of PfMP, is it possible?

4- I need to get real practices / exam questions of PfMP, so where can I find and/or purchase it exactly from PMI?

Thank you for anybody willing to support me.

Doing PMP certification gives base for other certifications like Program Management & Portfolio Management as one goes from the level of Project-Program -Portfolio Management when accumulating individual experiences.
PgMP is one the toughest exam created and it tests skills of program manager on job. especially Standards for Program Management is very well written book.
PfMP is not much expanded yet due to limited certified holders.Depending on Job requirements and experience one can opt for it.

Here are certified professionals as of May1st 2018 published by PMI in all three certifications.

PMP- 853,281
PgMP's- 2256
PfMP's- 541.

My suggestion is to do PgMP first(if already PMP) and then go for PfMP as that will give you good conceptual edge. i have done PMP,PgMP & PfMP and providing insight based on my learning experience.
