I'm looking for some guidance. When I looked at the definitions of the PfPM, PgPM and PMP my background and current role is more aligned with PfMP. Since this PMI certification is relatively new, information on how to prepare for it is more limited and it is less known by government recruiters and procurement specialists (at least in Canada). Most of the requirements are for PMP even if the role is more in line with PfMP or PgMP. Does anyone know if in these situation it is viewed as equivalent (or better) than PMP? Does anyone have recommendation on how to prepare for the certification test?

Thank you
Richard

You know you are in an elitist group when the members don't bother to define their terms,especially acronyms.

PMP = Project Management Professional
PgMP = Program Management Professional
PfMP = Portfolio Management Professional.

Remember, not everyone is as informed as you.

I opted for PMP and then PMI-RMP then PgMP and finally PgMP. I hope I made the right decision.

I passed my PMP in 2018 and my PMI-ACP this January 2021. I am now into the PgMP exam prep as it is more aligned with the role am engaged in organizations I serve. I hope to pass PgMP exam on my first try just like the PMP and the PMI-ACP exams. The Standard for Program Management is a very rich study material and I just attended a live virtual boot camp for this.

I currently have PMP for several years and recently did PMI-ACP as the focus now is on Agile Methodologies. I am looking at both PfMP, and PgMP as my next choice of certification. Both of them have slightly different knowledge bases. Several Program Management positions indicate PgMP as a preferred certification over PMP. I have not come across a position that specifically asked for PfMP. However, from a practice perspective, PfMP is more aligned with executive roles. Your choice should depend on whether you would like to pursue a certification for building knowledgebase to better perform in your current role or looking for a credential to land a better job. I have been in executive roles and performed most of PfMP and PgMP functions. In my opinion, it depends on what you are expecting from these certifications. I am vacillating between PgMP and PfMP but PfMP is suited for higher executive roles.

Any additional thoughts?
As per my experience and opinion, PgMP leads to wards CIO path. Portfolio is again for same path, but depends upon requirement of organization. Currently I am planning to attempt PgMP and DASSM. Please suggest.

I am looking for some guidance on Strategy Planning & Management perspective. I am PMP certified and have total 20 years of experience with experience in Project management and IT technology Solutions. Does PfMP certification fulfil the requirement from Strategy Management perspective?

I agree with most here, being PMP and PgMP. I skipped PfMP after I read the standard and was disappointed as it would not have helped me in my role as a PfM.

There are 1,5 million PMPs globally and less than 10K PgMPs and PfMPs each. I see PMP as a more general certification recognized by many non-project managers, those who hire you, listen to you and ask for your expertise.

PgMP certification was much more challenging, and the difference between programs and projects is less understood and practiced. In the market, it is seen as a specialist credential. I assume it is the same for PfMP.
