Knowledge Management must be viewed as a project by itself. Check inside knowledge management institute and knowledge management association to understand what knowledge management really is. Unfortunatelly, it is a new buzzword. But believe me, it is outside there from more than 20 years ago. For example, lot of people do not know that knowledge management is critical to implement agile inside one organization (in fact, without knowledge management, you will not get agile)

You need to encourage the employees to share their knowledge from their areas of expertise, the medium can vary from simple document to providing a webinar which can be recorded and later used for self learning by new employees.

You need to look at the organization and decide what it's goal is in terms of knowledge. What knowledge needs to be captured, from where/whom, for what purpose and how does that knowledge need to be transferred. That will lead to deciding how it will be housed and what programs and processes will be put in place to meet the goal.

Implementing a KM structure should be tackled like any other project in terms of how to research and develop the plan and tools/resources involved and then executing it's implementation to meet the goals.

Interesting question. I can tell you that without leadership buy-in and direction, the efforts will not go far. There is a structure and foundation that would need to be instilled led by a KM team. Transparency, Working out Loud, Communities of Practice will all help to begin the KM revolution!

Hi Adel,

The best way to establish and maintain effective knowledge management system can only be achieved by deploying MS SharePoint. SharePoint is an excellent central repository and information management system.

I don't agree with that statement, in addition, simply by having access to a system does not equate to anything. KM is not a system, it's a practice.
