From your own experience with your clients on different projects, can you think of a common thing that brought satisfaction to the client ?

Once of the most important thing is keep the client updated on all aspects of project whether ahead or delayed.
Next is to deliver quality and translation of client ideas into working component as the client desires so.

What brings most satisfaction to the client, apart from good communication, is the contractor's sincere efforts and good intention to meet the project deadlines while meeting safety and Quality obligations on expected lines.Professional ethics , mannerism and cooperative behavior with all the project participants acts as a catalyst in establishing a good rapport with the Client.

For me it comes down to establish a relationship and trust. A major tool is listening and trying to understand his or her view, problems, thoughts, culture and feeding back that you understand. Avoid solution proposals, they may come later (by sales). A practical tool is having many dinners, food (and drinks) are relaxing, reducing barriers and making more risk friendly (= open to new ideas).
Don't ask for compensation of this, the client will be inclined to give something back anyhow.
And stay authentic, integer and share your values.
Though keeping good relation and building trust is important to bolster professional relationship with the client, this may not pay good dividends with out timely and satisfactory discharge of contractual obligations expected of a Contractor.

I think a common one for me would be to keep the client engaged, insist on their time and their input, even if they say they're not in a position to do so.

Most will have experienced clients/stakeholders that think their involvement on a project can be (very) part time. I think that pushing them to be involved/engaged ultimately allows them to have the necessary input they need. As they see things coming together, they're part of the team, they share the achievements and satisfaction is a by product of this.

That makes sense James - It is true although some clients might get offended as they might take it the wrong way thinking that you do not want to make decisions, etc. It depends on the client.

Thanks for the reply Rami, I agree with what you say here and i've experienced this first hand. We try to educate our clients as we're generally more experienced in running projects and they have engaged with my consultancy for a reason.

It's something we have to tread very carefully with at times but by explaining the reasons why we need their input, usually gets the right response. We only do it with best intentions
