We do have PCs in large projects . The role is usually given to a junior PM or someone new to organization to give a feel of how the organization tackle things and boost confidence for tackling large scale projects independently.

Drake SettsuProject Manager / BloggerHi, United States
Very interesting comments from the group.
I have never worked with a PC on a large project. It comes down to the cost of resources. Management wants to keep the labor cost at a minimum.
So many team members were doing double duty. They had their day job and project team member job. The PM had to work smart to manage the project. A Project Coordinator would be considered a luxury.

On large projects, and I am talking Construction, a project coordinator might seem as an added cost, but he or she definitely contributes in many ways towards the success of the project so from my experience, it is a necessary role, not a luxury one. Yet, in other industries, it might be.

For construction projects I will agree with a project coordinator adding value.

Hi!
I believe it adds value on large and complex projects.
In my case the PC handles project politics and helps me unblock critical situations and decisions.

Tamer, I agree with you. However, clearly defining amd communicating the roles and responsibilities is part of the Project Manager / Management Team in addition to being fully defined in the Project Management Plan (HR MGT Plan)
