Activity attributes are active components associated with activity like Activity ID, duration, dates, resources, predecessors, successors, constraints and any change in attributes can impact schedule. WBS dictionary is like a help file where you can enter any relevant information to help in understanding basis of planning and detailed understanding of scedule like SOW, Estimated resources, control account, cost related information, quality procedures, assumptions etc.
As per 'A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) – Fifth Edition'
Activities, distinct from milestones, have durations, during which the work of that activity is performed, and may have resources and costs associated with that work. Activity attributes extend the description of the activity by identifying the multiple components associated with each activity. The components for each activity evolve over time. During the initial stages of the project, they include the activity identifier (ID), WBS ID, and activity label or name, and when completed, may include activity codes, activity description, predecessor activities, successor activities, logical relationships, leads and lags , resource requirements, imposed dates, constraints, and assumptions. Activity attributes can be used to identify the person responsible for executing the work, geographic area, or place where the work has to be performed, the project calendar the activity is assigned to, and activity type such as level of effort (often abbreviated as LOE), discrete effort, and apportioned effort. Activity attributes are used for schedule development and for selecting, ordering, and sorting the planned schedule activities in various ways within reports. The number of attributes varies by application area.
The WBS dictionary is a document that provides detailed deliverable, activity, and scheduling information about each component in the WBS. The WBS dictionary is a document that supports the WBS. Information in the WBS dictionary may include, but is not limited to:
Code of account identifier,
Description of work,
Assumptions and constraints,
Associated schedule activities,
Technical references, and
The way I look at it Alexandra, is that the WBS dictionary's focus is on the work package, not the activity. True, as the definition shared by Anupam shows, the work package usually has one or more activity associated to it. But activities are ancillary in a WBS dictionary.
Thanks Stéphane. Very pragmatic...and at that time of head is full, 2 weeks before the exam, it helps ;)
Glad to help, Alexandra. All the best on the exam.
I have posted a new question regarding calculations on EVM...if I may ask you to see it :)
Thnaks again Stéphane
Alexandra, WBS Dictionary describe work packages in a WBS e.g. resources, cost, assumptions, constraints associated with a work package etc. Activities Attributes describe the Activities of a project e.g. duration, dates, effort involved to perform an activity.
If you take Microsoft Project all columns you can see (visible and non visible) are activity attributes. The description and explanation about what one activity is belongs to wbs dictionary.
Here you go Alexandra
