ITIL really handles the ongoing IT operations. ITIL can be valuable if you are managing IT projects where you have to hand off your deliverables to an IT organization.

Hi Demetrius, ITIL Foundation is mandatory in our company. Taking next level exam is optional.
Anupam, as far as I remember some big companies pay for this kind of certifications, isnt? Not only the ITIL, also others.

You are right Maria. They reimburse the training and certification cost once you pass. I am lucky in this case :)

This is one of the benefits that I miss and I didn't think about before to start as freelance.

I can realistically see having an ITIL foundation helping an IT project manager work with infrastructure teams and other operational groups, such as technical support. Understanding the way they think helps but it will not help in your "core" project management activities.

Conversely, what is more "core" project management than communicating effectively with your stakeholders?

Good luck!

Certainly it's helpful for any IT PM, Data Center PM and other technical lead roles. You may also find it beneficial working with externally facing projects with clients who use this in their organizations.
