ITIL really handles the ongoing IT operations. ITIL can be valuable if you are managing IT projects where you have to hand off your deliverables to an IT organization.

That's an interesting comment. I was thinking about ITIL, because some headhunters recommended me to have it, but...maybe I should re-think about it.

I have the ITIL Foundation certificate and I have found it to have zero bearing on my work. It's interesting, but the value you get does depend on your industry and also whether your company applies ITIL routinely for all IT work. It might give you an idea of what the IT ops division of your company does if you haven't worked closely with them, and as Stephane says, it broadens your business knowledge around managing the transition to service of new projects in IT.

ITIL is IT service management framework. It manages the IT services from business need, service initiating and design to continuous service improvement and service termination (withdrawal). IT service in ITIL framework has a lifecycle that interacts with PM and other frameworks. For example, ITIL covers the creation of business case, risks, security, and requirements for the IT service. However, ITIL is known to work best for IT service transition and operations while other parts in the service lifecycle are covered by more dedicated and well-known frameworks and standards (e.g. PMBOK). If an organization uses ITIL framework and PMBOK standard, they should coordinate and clarify the responsibilities of each.

If you are into IT projects, Maria, don't discount the ITIL Foundation. It's usually a 2- day course with the proctored exam at the end.

Remember that as a project manager, it is as important, if not more, to broaden your knowledge and skills, than it is to deepen your knowledge in project management.

In other words, project managers should be well-rounded, not specialists.

I have been ITIL trained - I found it very complimentary to PMP training & certification. I work in IT in the healthcare industry and find ITIL helpful in my daily work and agree with Stephane that it deepened my knowledge and understanding of PM concepts. I would recommend it, Maria! I was able to join a class and we all took the ITIL test at the end of the training. I think it was a 3-day training course if I remember correctly.

Hi Laxman, I think it depends on the person's background whether the ITIL Foundation would serve as benefit or not. If you have an deep IT Software background I am not sure if gaining the certificate will benefit. Does the company require or encourage team member to obtain it?

Hi Demetrius, ITIL Foundation is mandatory in our company. Taking next level exam is optional.
