All is about project stakeholder analysis. If you know your stakeholders then you will plan how to communicate with them. In project risk management it is critical to do that.

I worked with Stakeholders who use to treat Risks as Project Manager way to transfer responsibility or find some escape routes when things goes bad. I believe the art of communication plays significant role, when we share risk it should engage stakeholders in creative thinking for finding solutions or hedge risk against some contingencies

You are right,Saket. Most of the stakeholders have such bent of mind. The Project Manager has a tough task at hand to make them realise that Project risks are to be managed and mitigated by each party who has the obligation/responsibility towards managing their portion of risks rather than in indulging in blame game and taking undue advantage of the contractor who is ,generally, at the receiving end . Good communication done respecting each other's concern go a long way in managing risks.

You are right, Stakeholder don't realize that a risk is their and they are the one that need to work on it, not the project manager.
Obviously it is better when everybody collaborate, it often bring the optimal solution.

Art of communication is fundamental in requirements elicitation, stakeholder engagement, risks elicitation. Further, in order to identify which matters most for the key stakeholders and demonstrating how the risk impacts the project objectives which matters most to the key stakeholders also takes "good communication skill".
It is project manager's responsibility to continuously engage with stakeholders and communicate effectively balancing against progressive elaboration.

I agree with all comments. The correct tone of communication is very important when communicating information regarding risks and risk mitigation. Depending on your audience your tone will necessarily have to change in order to communicate the message effectively.

Preparing for and calculating risk is vital to the success of our projects and excellence in communication around risk management is crucial. Project Managers are said to spend up to 90% of their time communicating. Our communication needs to be efficient and effective. It is not always easy, but as we build our reputations in companies for avoiding, transferring and mitigating risks our voice becomes stronger.
