I recently read something very interesting about the best time of day to get work done. According to clinical psychologist and sleep specialist Michael Breus, your genetics can tell you when it’s the perfect time to do just about anything. We all have heard the terms “early bird” or “night owl”, but there might be something to thinking about this when you work with teams. We might look for certain tasks at a time of day when each person is most productive. There is also an online quiz on this subject (takes about a minute at www.thepowerofwhenquiz.com) where you can learn your chronotype – looking at your natural sleep and genetic rhythms. He categorizes people based on this into 4 categories – dolphin, lion, bear and wolf. Being cognizant of this might help us work more efficiently with our teams. What do you think about this? I am considering using this information in a presentation I am giving at hospital on efficiencies.

Hello Chandrashekhar:

I got the book from Amazon.com, it was about $15.00. There is also a lot of information about the book out there. There is a good CBS news clip from September of last year with the author talking about the book. Here is a link to that segment:

Lori,I have participated in the quiz and my chronotype is "Bear"which Breus describes as "Glue of Society".I don't know what that means. The news clip is interesting. What happens if the chronotypes of husband and wife are not compatible or within your project team. How do you deal with such situation?

That was great, and the result seemed spot on.

My chronotype was LION
Hi Andrew: Only 10% of the overall population fall into the Lion category. I am also a Lion. I wonder if the majority of Project Managers fall into that category???

Hi Rami:

I thought it might be helpful for us as project managers to better understand times of day for our teams - could be useful in scheduling meetings or selecting best time to brainstorm or even know the optimal time to wrestle with tough project decisions.
This is true Lori but I am pretty sure that you as a person and professional definitely know when you are most and when you are least productive and act accordingly.

Hi Rami - that is true - I do know I have always been an "early bird" and mornings are the best most productive time for me.......but, I never really had a good way to find out about my teammates most productive times. In the past, I scheduled meetings when the conference rooms were available or when it best worked in everyone's calendars. By using this quiz, I can try to schedule meetings or work assignments at times that better suited to the attendee's most productive time of day. I have found that my teammates are interested in taking the quiz, and it is providing me with some good data.

This is a great idea Lori provided that the Quiz gives precise results and the input is genuine - Sometimes it works, others it might not so we have to always depends on our own intelligence as PM's - This is my humble opinion.

Thanks for sharing Lori! Interesting thoughts. I was a LION.

I'll have to check out the book. Curious about his thoughts on applying the knowledge of your chronotype.

Hi Shawn - the LION chronotype descriptions were very accurate in describing me. I asked my teammates here at work to take the test as well. It was fun to see that most of my team are BEARS, one other LION and two so far are DOLPHINS. Knowing this information will now help me schedule meetings to productive work for them at times that will best fit their peak performance times. I like this idea and am looking forward to trying it.

Hello Chandrashekhar - funny you should make the statement about husband and wife not having compatible chronotypes! I am a LION and love early mornings, but my husband is the total opposite and is a WOLF. He is definitely a night person, and often when I am exhausted and falling into bed, he is ready to start a project! It hasn't been easy for us being wired so differently - but it has worked for 36 years! We have been married a long time and have learned to appreciate each others strengths and peak performance times! I guess it can work the same in the jobs - we just need to be mindful and consider the best time of day for tasks, assignments, decisions and meetings. I thought this was a fun way to introduce these ideas by looking at our sleep cycles and taking our genetics into consideration. Thanks for taking the test and for responding to this discussion.
