Has anyone heard of the book THE POWER OF WHEN?

I recently read something very interesting about the best time of day to get work done. According to clinical psychologist and sleep specialist Michael Breus, your genetics can tell you when it’s the perfect time to do just about anything. We all have heard the terms “early bird” or “night owl”, but there might be something to thinking about this when you work with teams. We might look for certain tasks at a time of day when each person is most productive. There is also an online quiz on this subject (takes about a minute at www.thepowerofwhenquiz.com) where you can learn your chronotype – looking at your natural sleep and genetic rhythms. He categorizes people based on this into 4 categories – dolphin, lion, bear and wolf. Being cognizant of this might help us work more efficiently with our teams. What do you think about this? I am considering using this information in a presentation I am giving at hospital on efficiencies.

Thanks for sharing Lori! Interesting thoughts. I was a LION.

I'll have to check out the book. Curious about his thoughts on applying the knowledge of your chronotype.
Hi Shawn - the LION chronotype descriptions were very accurate in describing me. I asked my teammates here at work to take the test as well. It was fun to see that most of my team are BEARS, one other LION and two so far are DOLPHINS. Knowing this information will now help me schedule meetings to productive work for them at times that will best fit their peak performance times. I like this idea and am looking forward to trying it.

Lori,I have participated in the quiz and my chronotype is "Bear"which Breus describes as "Glue of Society".I don't know what that means. The news clip is interesting. What happens if the chronotypes of husband and wife are not compatible or within your project team. How do you deal with such situation?
Hello Chandrashekhar - funny you should make the statement about husband and wife not having compatible chronotypes! I am a LION and love early mornings, but my husband is the total opposite and is a WOLF. He is definitely a night person, and often when I am exhausted and falling into bed, he is ready to start a project! It hasn't been easy for us being wired so differently - but it has worked for 36 years! We have been married a long time and have learned to appreciate each others strengths and peak performance times! I guess it can work the same in the jobs - we just need to be mindful and consider the best time of day for tasks, assignments, decisions and meetings. I thought this was a fun way to introduce these ideas by looking at our sleep cycles and taking our genetics into consideration. Thanks for taking the test and for responding to this discussion.

Lori,it is indeed funny but a reality at the same time ! I wish, I had the means available then (45 years into marriage) to check on the compatibility factor before agreeing to marry.Ha ha ! Like most of the successful couples ,the success is the end result of marital adjustment/understanding /sacrifice either or both partners make.

I agree with you that a competent Project Manager using his interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence advantageously can bring all the team members on board to manage the project in a collaborative manner.

@Maria: what was your chronotype? :)
@Anupam, I did twice, first with me and my habits while working LION, after with my new habits as a job hunter BEAR. Is it curious? I'm adaptative, lol

Lori,

I just tried the test today and I turned out to be a DOLPHIN - The interesting part is the video that explains about Dolphins - Most of what was said is very true except that I really enjoy working within a Tea.

Thanks a lot Lori for this - Keep them coming.

Cheers,
RK

Hi Maria - thanks for checking out the quick 1-minute test. I was surprised to find out that I was a Lion, but after reading through the summary, the results fit me to a T. Kind of an interesting way to look at the best time of day for team meetings, decision making, etc.
Lory, What do you think to post it as poll? Like this, we can see the percentages at this community level

Lori, thank you. That's an interesting find. I always found it helpful for collaboration to better understand the personalities in a team. Regarding chronotype I fear that there typically are just too much constraints to really try to optimize the timing of the work that needs to be done. Maybe the most important things on one's own To-Do list, but more? Not sure about it.
BTW I am a bear and for the most part the description fits, with some small exceptions. More interesting is that the folks who posted here and belong to one of the rarer types actually felt that their chronotype was a really good fit. I guess I'll get the book and look into this a little bit further...
