We don't know what will happen tomorrow. Uncertainly is one of most common causes for the project failure.

You are right Sungjoon, uncertainty is a major concern on projects but is it not a pointer to the lacunae/drawback in the Project Initiation Document?

Agree Communication failure is most often the source.

Specially between client and project, often difficult, for lack of experience from client in project.

I agree with your views, however, unable to read the post as the link opens the website WWW.proventures.com without giving any clue to the post on communication failure.

Thank you for your reply. It might be applicable not only in the initiating stage of the project, but also in all the life cycle of the project up to the closing stage even though uncertainly might become less when the project reaches closing stage. In my opinion managing project is managing the uncertainty.

I think that Project Management has been dominated by a focus on methods. If the project fails, it's a failure of the methodology right? I'm not convinced.

Projects are predominantly about people who do things and influence others to do things, hopefully to achieve an agreed result. I agree with the comments above that communication is a key downfall that influences poor project outcomes. But there is more.

I think that successful projects are a function of three things:

1. Leadership, and in particular a project leader.
2. A culture of success
3. Methods to support (but not define) project delivery

Project managers do have a bad reputation, and we as a profession have a responsibility to raise the standards and eliminate the sources of failure.

Communication is a signifiant reason for failure. That said, Simon brings up a good point, and makes me think of adaptability. Trying to shoe horn together a project and method just for the sake of it, brings with it potential issues. Choose the best tool for the job, adapt and flow when needed.

You are right Sungjoon !However,a complete clarity to the stakeholders through the Project Initiation Document will help in a better understanding and planning to take care of uncertainties contributing to Project failure.
