Personal growth is very more important for professional success. In the US Army, one of the character traits of a good NCO is to know oneself and seek self improvement. Sadly, many people do not recognize their full potential until a coach/ mentor identifies and enhances their abilities. Example are the great athletes; MJ, Tiger, Montana they were greats, but not without a coach improving their strengths and minimizing their weaknesses. The coach/mentor will never be better in performance, their real joy is success of their prodigies.
As Project Managers, there is real value in being a coach/mentor, the rewards do not have a dollar sign to it, but fulfills the need to be part of something bigger than yourself. I guarantee Pat Summitt as great as she is still has a mentor in terms of a confidant. You can not coach what you are not exposed to yourself.

Good Question John.
Well, coaching is great but it is always good for a PM to know in what areas he requires improvement and seeking coaching if required so coaching and being coached can go both in parallel in my opinion.
We should know what areas we struggle with, sometimes how we view ourselves is different than how others perceive us. Tools like Peer to Peer or 360 can give insight into our behaviors, but they need an objective stance, not a condemning results. What tools does the group use? Saving Changes...

From my point of view just a few years ago, the use of the terms Coach and Mentor seemed to be reserved for specialized technicians, human resources departments or consulting companies in the sector.
In our days, the meaning of these words has become vulgarized, and it is common for them to appear in traditional and digital media.
In addition, it generates the diffused sense that both practices are analogous and that everyone can put them into practice.
Yes being mentored or having a coach is an amazing and rewarding experience, also sharing our knowledge with our team members, but can we say that we are real mentors or coach? Do we have the tools to do it great?
I agree and yes, we can say that we are real mentors or coach, if we remember iron sharpens iron. When iron sharpens iron small particulars break, much like we develop new insight and perspectives for different results. Saving Changes...

While I don't have a mentor in project management, I do have a network, including this community, that I reach out for guidance and feedback.
I am a project management mentor at my company.

Very relevant question John. Mentoring is like polishing of the diamond. Diamond will sparkle and its value increases only when it is cut. Similarly a mentor and coach enhances the value of the individual. Ideally mentoring should start right from school . But somehow it does not happen most of the time. If it starts at least when one starts working, it would be great. In to days world mentoring and reverse mentoring are both essential . I have been lucky to have been mentored and am mentoring many of my students and continue to do so over the years . It is a simply wonderful.

I have this community and I just joined the local PMI chapter. I wouldn't mind having a mentor in project management though.

Great question! Yes, I am mentoring with multiple people. I have always taken the perspective that I want to learn more each day and want to continue to grow in my role. I believe that anyone, at any level, can benefit from a solid mentor.
Liana,
There are many hero stories of how someone invested time and effort into other that produces positive impacts. Can you remember a person where you decided to invest your effort to develop them? How did it turn out? Saving Changes...

John:
Project Managers should aspire to lead and help grow others leaders. PM should act as mentors, coaches and sponsors as they move up the career ladder.
Naomi,
Are you developing your replacement?
Someone asked me this question when I first got into a position. At first, I was confused; I thought why did you hire me only to replace me. But that isn't the case; I read a study where 85% of positions filled come from within the organization for many reasons. By me developing my replacement supports the growth of the organization.
Unless you have no inspiration of advancing or retiring, there is a need to find your successor. Remember, no one person is indispensable, if this is not the case, why do founders, presidents, and CEO pack their desks?

Thank you for sharing such an important and sensitive topic. In my humble opinion one cannot consider self sufficient, meaning without mentor-ship. Why? Simply because throughout one's life receives training or schooling. On the other hand one uses schooling as baseline and then create its own path. However, human nature tends to rely on feedback to tweak and polish anything needed to deliver the best possible results. At the end one can consider being mentored as a tool for improvement and then provide mentor-ship to those who needs it. Once again thank you for sharing.
Edgar,
Thank you.

Excellent topic. I think a Project Manager or any type of leader should have a mentor because there may be areas he/she may not see for improvement; but a trusted advisor / mentor can assist them in growing. The Project Manager should be mentoring his/her team members to assist them in growing as well. This is what leaders do.
Demetrius,
Would you fire a person who made a $3 million mistake for your company?
Three reasons why you would keep the person:
1) Can you say it was them or the process which created the mistake? If you don't correct the error, it will happen again.
2) Chances are, the person will not make the same mistake again.
3) The person will not make the same mistake for their new company.

It's not clearly so binary. It can ebb & flow too. Right now, this community is my mentor. I also hope that my contributions here have helped others, and from that respect, maybe I can be considered a mentor too. As Rami stated, the two can run together and are certainly related.
Andrew,
You are absolutely correct. One thing for certain is sowing and reaping. You will not harvest corn if you plant wheat. The same token, sowing positive energy into a situation or into someone will produce desired results. What we face is the dilemma of germination period. Some actions produce immediate results, while others take longer; investing in the stock market is a good example. Therefore, mentoring or being mentored is an ebb & flow occurrence. Saving Changes...
