The question is a way to judge your commitment to the profession and the organizational fit and understand what skills you bring to the PM role .
If you have been a Techie, they will know that your Technical skills can be used effectively and perhaps there is some work to be done on your soft skills.
if you have been a good Business Analyst before , you will be able to bring more soft skills to the table already.
They would also like to know that if they are investing in your Project Management career that you have been or will be showing growth as a PM and will not run off and become a tradesman
In the interview they want the truth, see your motivation at getting in project management. Saving Changes...

Mine is easy, nothing to hide. I started as SAP consultant more than 11 years ago, and few months after I was leading a team in a BIG5 IT company, I discovered my passion for communications, engage teams, and planning then I focus my career path to Project Management.
