I agree with Sergio. You need to tell your story.

Mudassar:
Sure, you could just answer the question about "what you do" but the better choice is to relate your answer to address the "why" they should hire you, the "risk" they should take to hire you and the "value" you'll add to address their biggest pain points. It requires doing your homework and being ready to shine.

As Sergio Luis Conte related, the best answer is your own. My path began as an Army Fire Support & Plans Officer, during which I was taught a methodology very similar to the PMI approach for requirements gathering, planning, executing, monitoring/controlling, and then closing out the plan to include an After Actions Report (AAR) for lessons learned. Upon retirement and an earlier parallel journey through the realm of quality awards programs, I actually learned the PMI approach during my Masters program. Then I had the good fortune of using the PMBOK as a PM at Anthem, Booz Allen Hamilton, Northrop Grumman Corporation, ASQ, IBM and eventually earning that elusive PMP. The journey continues.

Difficult to be of help, you must know the reasons for your particular case. I may just add that if you are passionate about PM, the interviewer will feel it. Good luck!

Tell your story, mine involved my boss assigning me to lead solo projects, small teams and bigger teams from there on. We all started from somewhere and we get more experience as we do more.

Everyone has their own path into project management and I agree with others tell the truth of how you got here.
I progressed from managing mechanical packages into project engineering. I have really enjoyed being at the front end of projects and it's where I want to stay.
