From my point of view, one of the outstanding subjects of the departments of Human Resources is, without a doubt, the satisfaction and the motivation of the employees.
The emotional salary refers to all those non-economic remunerations that the worker can obtain from the company and whose objective is to positively encourage the image that has on their work environment.
Does your company offer "emotional salary"?
Some examples, remotely work one day each week, kindergarden, university tuition...
I like the name, first time I see it.
So it include flexible work hour, work from home, free coffee, and the like, the concept is interesting.
I have benefit from that. In some place it is the 4 days week, that create problem, your left with 3 days for meeting, has some have Monday other Friday.
Is it really a benefit? Not that sure.
Thank you, Vincent...Agree, there are some benefits that are a little tricky...one of those is "Company Cell phone"...mmm should I answer it after my working hours?...

A few years ago I didn't understand why people choose to have a personal cell on to of the corporate phone!
I would go without both now.
It should be in your hiring contract that you expected to answer the phone off hours.

Andrew, thank you for your comments. By the way, I received the email with your name...not anonymous...lol
That is funny how that works. Not very anonymous.
I actually did not write the Anonymous comment, I had replied to it but did not intend to. So I deleted the comment and reposted. Saving Changes...

I think the workplace has definitely changed over the years. What were once considered perks are now considered, as you refer to it, emotional salary.
I don't recall any job I've had where I was given such a salary. It's always be do the work and go home. If you don't do your job, you're fired. Perks were considered a cost burden and were begrudgingly offered.
I personally think emotional salary is reserved for high performance employees or employees that have the longest tenure, and are not for the rest of the group.

When I talked about the emotional salary, it is not something that the HR department directly tells you, like "your salary will be X dollars a year plus we will include an Emotional Salary".
From my point of view, perks are given to good performers employees, Emotional Salary is something different...
In the last years that I worked in Spain, due to the recession, many colleagues did not receive a raise in their salary during the last 5 years. In these cases, HR "played" with emotions, example "PTO on your birthday" ... that's a clear example of Emotional Salary.

Emotional salary is becoming more important, especially for working families. When you are lucky enough to work in an area with lots of competition for IT jobs, I have found that more are advertising flexible work times, working from home, improved vacation policies etc. Working in the States means we have much less vacation and work life balance than other countries. I think the pendulum is swinging the other way and more companies are realizing the benefit to providing the much needed emotional salary along with the monetary one.

The best "emotional salary" is a love to the work that you do.
Extra perks like free food, entertainment, work at home may have less value if the work is very engaging and interesting by itself. The person will be productive if his love to work grows with his experience and promotions.
On the other hand, if the work is not interesting and engaging, the perks may keep someone in place for a while but not for long.

Agree! Having a passion for your work is key.
Take in mind that this kind of perks as free fountain soda or neverending coffee is very American. In Spain for example, I had to pay 50 cents each time that I grabbed a coffee.
Now, I can't imagine myself without free coffee or sodas...my doctor is completely disappointed with me, lol

And you have to wonder if companies should be trying to retain unhappy employees.

Yes in Australia we do have a good work from home policy especially for parents of young children as long as you genuinely use it and don't abuse it.
Also there is a system of "Rostered Day off". An employee works a 40 hour week to get a day off every fortnight . You would think that they are working an extra 2 hours a week, but divide it over five days and you see that they are working 24 minutes extra each day for a day off each month. And in the scheme of things you would gladly take - being paid less for one day each month, to get that holiday.
Across the board, every permanent employee gets 4 weeks of annual leave each completed year of service.
I don't see anyone being refused flexible hours either, come early , leave early or come late , leave late as long as you get the work done.
Plus you can take 5 days off in a year without having to produce a medical certificate , which helps especially when you have those occasional stressful days when you don't want to go to work or the doctor and instead just go fishing or a long drive

Deepesh, thank you for your comments. Very interesting your comments about "Rostered Day off", I love to learn how other countries manage their teams.
