I have around 8 years of sap implementation experience specially in manufacturing industries. I am trying to diversify to either it infrastructure or financial services
How did you change your domain? Any pointers appreciated.
I agree with most of the replies you have received here. PM's role is to manage the project irrespective of domain. However, companies need a PM who has sound knowledge of the same field.
So, you have to make sure that you have certain experience in the field you want to move.

Project Management concepts are applicable to all industries. These are helpful in changing job profile and industry. What is Project Management? In simple words Project Management is essentially amalgamation and application of knowledge & skills related to following areas: Project Management Knowledge as described in the PMBOK Guide and other PM standards. Application Area or Domain Knowledge Interpersonal skills General Management Knowledge and skills Environment knowledge

That´s not an easy answer to that question. I have participated in a SAP implementation (more than 20 countries at once) as PM leading functional areas. Because we had good partners to help (like Accenture) it was not a problem not knowing SAP. But, if the project requires a more "Hands-on" or "Technical" PM it could be much harder for me.
It also happens when a manage Data Center Move project... I had the best partners and was not required to me to be an expert on infrastructure...
Of course.. on all those cases I have read a lot of books, talked with a lot of people... And talking to people was the key, because they know where the problçens will occur. Saving Changes...

The PM processes stay the same regardless of domain!!
If you switch domains:
1) on day one, find a mentor with experience and meet with them daily to learn enterprise factors and organizational assets
2) develop a daily training plan for yourself. Fire-hose approach but learn all that you can about the tools; technologies; customers. Advance your knowledge daily.
3) arrange to meet all the key stakeholders in the company face-to-face; "hey I'm the new guy"; ask good questions; how do you prefer this, that and the other, etc.
4) with your mentor at your side, step out boldly and start planning your first project within 4 weeks; experience is the best teacher for new domains (assumes you bring your own PM know-how). Observe, orient, but go slow on the decide and act part. Bounce your judgement and decisions off your mentor first (quick 5 minute sanity check). Don't worry you have a lot of toes and fingers to sacrifice along the way, you just don't want to lose a whole foot right out of the chocks:)
5) people first, always people first, you're there to help everyone after all
6) have fun, smile, and don't lose your sense of humor and humility
You will be just fine :) Saving Changes...
I meant IT infrastructure like network, datacenter etc
hello Nisha ,
kindly guide me here ,I am sales & event project professional ,but due pandemic when i am trying to switch TO IT industry i have been particularly asked about experience in it where i havnt worked ever & i am not considered , i have worked on Salesforce project & big event project my fundamentals are clear & i posses skills in spade which is required as PM ,I am learning IT terminologies & common tools so that i leave no stone unturned .
guide me here how should land as PM in other sector it has been really very excruciating. Saving Changes...
Like everyone stated above, really, the domain should not come in the way of a PM's job. But most companies post certain technology or area as a requirement to be selected. I do not totally agree with that because a solid PM can drive any projects with any underlying technology successfully, if he/she has the right attitude to learn.
I was hired as an infrastructure PM al though I did not have experience and honestly, I did not like to be one either:-) My manager hired me because he wanted a solid PM and he saw that in me during the interview.
How should i ,Make my way ,i can send my profile & see where do i lack but there are bigot people simply barking up wrong tree they dont want PM with voracious appetite of learning & implementing they simply want a tag of particular industry .if you can guide me how to break in please tell me because i am tired of justifying that i can do PM role better in new industry irrespective i have never worked for that particular industry.
