Has anyone out there used this product to manage their company's information/knowledge?

We currently have SiteServer in place and are using it for many other pieces, but not this one.

I'd be interested in other's thoughts.

If you can't get a reference from anyone else, try Microsoft...

The example used on Microsoft site is JD Edwards. I would get a contact name from your local Microsoft rep.

Atmos Energy & Sprint both recently started using Site Server for this purpose. I'll see if I can't get someone who participated in those efforts to contribute here.

The Sister Site for Knowledge Management Magazine has a section dedicated to MS KM solutions. It's most marketing hype, but it includes some interesting stuff on WIN 2000, active directory inmplications.

Charles,

We at james martin + co have done several major Site Server/KM installations for corporate Intranets. Customers include Sprint and Atmos Energy. Site server provides an excellent means to categorize documents via a site vocabulary, submit documents online, and dynamically build links to submitted documents. This functionality puts site growth in the hands of Knowledge Workers, drastically reducing the need for full time HTML developers.

One caveat, Site Server is not a full scale document management solution. Features such as version control, check-in/check-out, etc. are missing. Site Server allows for one step approval of documents, therefore, more complex approval processes or workflow must be custom built. In short, Site Server offers a good set of base functionality but must be enhanced with custom built applications to create an enterprise-wide KM solution.

Index server would really do the trick.

Actually Bill, Index Server is used/replaced by using SiteServer.

One question to Steve about the "one step approval." We've been told by consultants that in fact you can put in several layers of approval (which is what we would need), but now I'm worried since reading your post.

Guess it's time to call Redmond......

Just found the attached White Paper on Microsoft about how to use SiteServer to implement a multilevel approval process.

You might want to look at Intraspect, at www,intraspect.com They offer a very robust solution that will permit any knowledge worker to add, access, track, and share information across all boundaries. Plus, it's browser-based on the client end, easy to set up, easy to admin, and ofers an enterprise customization interface. Check it out - it works regardless of any other app suites, protocols, etc., so you aren't married to a platform.
