I am quite new concerning this topic. What is your advise concerning "maturity" models. I know PMI "has" OPM3 but seems that CMMI is most commonly used. I check CMMI and it seems to extensive for a beginner.
What is our advise for an initial assessment? Which one is better? Saving Changes...
Many organizations consider CMMI maturity levels. It is a well known maturity model and accepted worldwide.
Definitely it is huge for a beginner. But change doesn't happen overnight. You need proper planning, SMEs, training to employees and dedication towards the process established.

PMI is updating OPM3 to its 4th edition. In the 3rd edition, they had made essential documentation unavailable unless you paid many thousands of dollars for it. It appears that may change in the 4th edition. Likewise, PMI had been promoting its own commercial maturity assessment service, but they recently announced they are quitting that. In the meantime, OPM Experts (whose founder originated OPM3 on PMI's behalf) has come out with another model: http://www.opmexperts.com/simple
