Hi. I'm working on a new book about IT project management and I'm looking for some stories/anecdotes from people about what it is like to be an IT project manager. In particular, I'm after a 'day in the life' and the story of someone who moved into IT PM from a different area, perhaps who was a business change manager, or a functional lead, or a software developer and who made the move into IT PM.
If you would be willing to share your experiences, please let me know! Thank you in advance.

Hi Elizabeth,

That sounds very interesting! I came from the automotive sector (specialized in accident case management) and became an IT project manager more than five years ago. I changed the company without knowing much about IT or PM - it was a big challenge, but the best thing I did. I love my job and the opportunities within. If you want to know more, just reach out. :)

Bests
Christina

*missed the Z - so sorry! :)

I'd love to know more, Christina, thank you! I have sent you a connection request so I can message you with some more details.

I'm happy to include others from other people as well, so if anyone else is in the same situation of having moved into IT PM from another area, then please say! Thanks!

A day in the life of an IT Project Manager .
I have always been in IT therefore I can offer the perception that people have about IT and who work outside of IT. It is more important for an IT Project Manager to develop business relationships .
Yesterday i went to donate plasma and the nurse there found out that I was working for the Blood Service. As soon as I said I was from the IT department, she showed me her laser printer that was crinkling the pages and indicated that she had called up support but got no answer.
Being aware that after hours support is only provided to system break down conditions and did not cover non essential items, I advised this to them and confirmed that there was another working printer for them to use and I also advised the Support desk this morning upon my return to work.
Whether its a generic Project Manager or IT Project Manager it is very important to know not only your stakeholders but your organization's customers and also clarify what service your department can offer them and when. It is important to look after the interests of both your customer and your employer .
It is also very important to explain the Service Catalogue - essentially what are the services that IT can provide to the business and assist and enhance Business processes. How can IT partner with the business , hand in hand and be a business enabler and not just be the scary acronym that only Tech Savvy people can understand

Elizabeth, if you are looking for stories, I'd be happy to help. Although my background here doesn't reflect it I've bounced from a combat officer to IT PM in the Army, to engineering/manufacturing to ERP to steel fabrication to engineering design and back to ERP implementations. Let me know, and perhaps we can arrange a Skype call to learn more about what you are looking for.
