There is not a correct answer. Everything depends on two key things: organizational culture and project stakeholder analysis, where customer is included. On the text books you will find collaboration as the "best". But, what is "best" or "worst"? It is a subjective matter that you have to transform into objective one. And that will be after taking into account culture and stakeholder analysis between other things.

The idea is to resolve conflicts in the best interest of all parties. Resolving conflicts is not a truly clear science, it requires skills of understanding and dealing with the exact situation your in. I have been involved in so many conflicts at different levels, and I was instrumental in bringing a final resolution to these conflicts. The idea here, each one was a unique situation, but at the end, you have to look at the big picture and try come up with the resolution that will serve the best interest of all parties. In some cases, you may have take a risk, but it is all about the specifics of the conflict.

Yes .. it should be win-win situation for all the parties involved. It depends entirely on the situation and the peoples involved, nature of conflict.
Find points of agreement with their concerns. Establish common ground to show the person you are listening. Try having complete discussion and remain calm.

Ask questions and gather information and facts that can help you to find the resolution. Take your time to respond with something that can help customer and also favors the organization.
