Project Manager Performance Evaluations

I am a member of an IT Project Management Group that was recently formed in a law firm. We are still working out some of the details, such as how will projects get assigned, etc. One detail I would like your help with is what is the criteria on which each project manager should be individually evaluated for an annual review? Keep in mind we may work on long term and short term projects. One suggestion is that we set goals/objectives at the beginning of the year. Our HR department looks at how well goals/objectives are met. However in a project-based position, how do you translate those goals in meaningful performance appraisals. Something else to point out is that the list of projects is submitted for budget approval by the IT Directors so this list translates into some of the projects we will work on, though every project may not have an IT project manager. We do feel that feedback from project team members and project stakeholders is important. Any forms or websites you can direct me to will be appreciated.

Dear Anonymous, sounds like you are right on top of how to approach developing a project manager performance plan. One approach that works well is to develop the performance plan with specific and measurable objectives for the requirements of the job. Project performance of the Project Manager as documented in the Project Manager Performance Report is a key input to the performance evaluation, but there are other performance plan duties beyond managing the project and project results that you might want to include and measure such as skill development (knowledge of the business, project management skill, technical skill), contribution to continuous process improvement, etc. I would be happy to email you a few of the templates that come with our project management process solution, Processes On Demand.
