For some this is a very basic question, but i have seen many people struggle trying to differentiate between these two.

In your own words, what is the major difference between Project Management Process Groups and Project Phases?

The project lifecycle represent different phases and can vary with the type of project. However, the project process doesn't change, they are grouped into the 5 process groups of Initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, closing.

Each project phase in the lifecycle goes through these 5 processes. For example a simple building construction project lifecycle may be:- design, statutory approval, build, furnish. The design phase would we initiated, planned, executed, monitored and controlled then close out. Same with statutory approval phase and others.

This is the details provided by PMI AI assistance

According to PMI proprietary content, the Project Life Cycle, Project Life Cycle Phase, and Project Process Group are distinct concepts. Here are some high-level details of each:

Project Life Cycle: The Project Life Cycle is the series of phases that a project goes through from its initiation to its closure. It defines the beginning and end of the project and provides a framework for managing the project. The Project Life Cycle is typically divided into phases, which can be sequential or overlapping, and each phase has its own set of deliverables and objectives.

Project Life Cycle Phase: A Project Life Cycle Phase is a distinct stage within the Project Life Cycle that has a specific set of objectives and deliverables. Each phase is completed before the next one begins, and the completion of each phase is marked by a review and approval process. The number and names of the phases can vary depending on the project and the organization.

Project Process Group: A Project Process Group is a set of interrelated processes that are performed to achieve a specific objective. There are five Project Process Groups: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and Controlling, and Closing. Each Process Group includes a set of processes that are performed to achieve the objectives of that group.

It's important to note that while the Project Life Cycle and Project Process Groups are distinct concepts, they are related and interact with each other throughout the project. The Project Process Groups are performed within each phase of the Project Life Cycle, and the output of one process may become an input to another process, a project deliverable, or supporting information.
