Oracle vs. SQL - Best of Breed?

We're currently looking at laying out the infrastructure that is going to drive everything we do in the future. A core piece of that is going to be the data and thus we want the "best of breed."

Now, I know everything I read says that Oracle is the best. It's scalable to the moon and the top companies use it.

What I'm struggling with is we are a 250 person company that will double in the near future. I question if the ROI from the cost of Oracle is worth it when compared to the cost of SQL Server.

Can anyone direct me to any whitepapers or other independent studies comparing these two? I've found plenty on Micorosft and Oracle, but I'd rather get something not from either of their marketing departments.

Thanks for the help.

Actually found a VERY good white paper that provides a detailed cost of ownership study between Oracle8i and Microsoft SQL Server.

Check it out at http://www.progress.com/services/pressrm/a...erdeen_1199.htm
