How to balance confidentiality with sharing information?

I like to consider information categories: need to know, helpful to know, neutral, better not to know, should not know, confidential, secret. When providing information make sure you know what category you're dealing with and manage yourself accordingly. Stay away from rumours and gossip as some recipients may take these as 'information'.
