Teaching as project experience for PMP

An acquaintance of mine is documenting her experience for the PMP application, and she's wondering if teaching courses would qualify. In my mind, each instance of a course is a small project, even if it's a course that's taught frequently. Each instance requires planning before it starts; during the course there's a lot of monitoring and control, as well as stakeholder management; and at the end there are closeout procedures and often lessons learned to be applied to future courses. Does anyone have experience with claiming this kind of experience?

Thanks in advance.

Is the teaching course related to project management and what is the field she is working in ?

The teaching isn't related to project management. That would matter if she were trying to get PDUs, but whether or not teaching a course can be considered a project for certification purposes I think would be independent of the field.

The experience to be claimed in the PMP application should be relevant to Project Management and Projects.

I am not really sure you can consider teaching a course that is not related to project management as a project.

I understand your logic, but when I applied I got credit for my dissertation as a project, and it had nothing to do with project management. So I'm extrapolating from that and hoping that someone has first-hand experience with this.

Hello Andrew;

Did you find an answer to the question? I teach IT courses where we have projects in them. Also, I create most of the courses from scratch.

By the way, how did you claim the experience on your dissertation? My doctorate dissertation was on Big Data Analytics within Small to Medium Size Enterprise. So, technically, it was a temporary project that created a unique solution.

I do have the required 4500h experience I am just curious, to add them.

Thank you.

If this is the case Andrew, then probably our fellow colleagues can give you a better advise than I can because I did not experience this myself. Good Luck

Teaching isn't experience. Experience is experience.

That's because it is a project. A project doesn't need to be about project management; it rarely is. The dissertation was a project, temporary, unique etc. So that's how the PDU's were awarded. Incidentally, how many PDU's were awarded for the dissertation Andrew?

I didn't get PDUs for the dissertation. It was some number of hours toward the total I needed to qualify for the PMP. it was 16 years ago, and I have no idea how many hours, but it was a sizable chunk.

I would argue that each instance of a course is both temporary and unique. Most of the stakeholders are unique each time a course is taught. Depending on the topic, course material might have to be adjusted to account for current events or other changes in the environment. Each instance has to be properly scheduled. It's pretty basic as projects go, but there's nothing in the rules saying that all project work claimed for certification has to be particularly complex.

Teaching any subject offers experience in teaching. Field project experience offers real world project management experience. The two normally don't correlate well. When I teach a subject, I end up becoming an SME on that subject or at least I aspire to become an SME.
In order for a student of project management to gain field experience, they have to actually run projects taking responsibility from inception to documenting completion.
