Greetings,

I am going to give a GoToMeeting based presentation to my seniors and colleagues located in different countries in exactly 7 days. The presentation will last 1 hour only and will be internal to our department. In such a situation, which topics should I cover and how should I go about it? Any tips and pointers are welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Lomash, some background might help know how best to give pointers...when you say PM presentation, what are you trying to do? incorporate project management in the company processes or present on a specific project?

Katherine, I am trying to introduce them to the PMI concepts and yes, perhaps incorporate project management on PMI standards so that it benefits the team and maybe portray the skill set I gained with my PMP certification :)

Thank you so much for your response!

What would be useful in such a brief time is to walk through key project management principles and values. Those are universally applicable whereas specific practices, lifecycles, phases and so on are domain-specific.

I would strongly recommend including content on the value of project management and the role of the project manager and sponsor.

Kiron,

Thank you very much for the valuable points! I was thinking on similar lines; covering the basic principles and background and then some stuff which raises queries and make them come back for more sessions in future.

So now I will start with background, values, roles of various stakeholders(PM, Sponsor, Vendors, etc.). However I also understand that since most of the people are mid level experienced managers they would be be familiar with certain titbits of my topics from the experience of their own careers. So, I also do want to touch on the Project Management knowledge areas so that the session not only runs them through things they relate to but also adds value to them with the help of Knowledge areas. Now this is a challenge to accomplish in one hour. So I'm trying to figure out how to make it the most value adding session in one hour which makes people come back for more and at that time I could elaborate on the knowledge areas and the phases.

Regards,
Lomash

A key success factor is to know your audience. You need to perform stakeholder management activities right now. You need to be agile (to use a buzzword) to anticipate to your audience and to plan how to react to your audience. You are in control and you have to create your audience reaction like a magician.

I absolutely agree. Knowing them is important and I take it as a challenge to win them at the same time add value for them. Good part is I know most of them and vice versa.

Thank you for that!

Then, here my recommendation: those people must find that they will be more rich with project management than without it. And rich does not mean more money only.

Your presentation should be one story you are telling them.
